I probably should have mentioned. Get the gloves with the rubber bumps on them, it's what my brother in law used when he worked at a glass factory. You don't want to drop one of these sheets on your head. As for the un-tempered thing cactusfreak mentioned. There's a point there. I'm not sure where to get it, but some adhesive clear film would be a good bit of insurance. I have some I got as a sample roll years ago. Maybe you could check greenhouse supply for this adhesive film. A layer on the inside and the outside and no worries about falling glass daggers.

Pic it up: I commend you for wanting to do something to help people with limited means. It reminds me of the man who watched how some homeless folks were living in cardboard boxes. He invented a portable home that could double as a big shopping cart to carry a person's belongings. There are lots of naysayers (see some posts on this board.) whose job is to discourage you. Ignore them. 2. My limited experience taking vegetables to a food pantry suggests that many people are not used to cooking garden vegs. I could not give away beautiful winter greens like spinach. Food pantries give out a lot of crap that's not very good for you but is easy to cook like hot dogs and mac and cheese. This is a huge challenge. 3. Re: the inexpensive greenhouse. I have been experimenting with Eliot Coleman's idea of a caterpillar tent that can cover a planted crop. In z6 you should be able to harvest, and maybe grow, all year. I have a picture of one at http://erehwonfarmjournal.blogspot.com/ I figure you can cover a 100' by 4' growing bed for about $75 for rebar, hoops, row cover, and plastic. I can put it up in about two hours -- a younger person could probably do it in one hour. 4. Your knowledge. The more you know, the better will be your ideas so build something this spring and learn what works. My first four caterpillars blew away, collapsed, ripped, and lost the weights. The fifth one is holding up pretty well so far this winter. Can't wait for spring to put up some more 5. Find the means. If you get something that works,grow cook, and eat your own food. Then you might show it to people who might have the means to help you. Possibly people who are already distributing food, local gardeners who "grow a row for the hungry", or a person with some money.
