Is this flax plant from flaxseeds?

I grew a about a teaspoon of flaxseeds about a month of so ago and not many sprouted but this one sprout has turned into a plant. But I am doubtful about this actually being flax as the soil I used was old and probably had other seeds. However, a couple of a weeks back I grew more seeds that sprouted, two of them survived a drought, and I'm sure about them being flax but wondering us the bigger plant is flax or not. Could somebody please identify this?

It may be a young Amaranthus.

The tiny seedlings may be flax - look similar to me, but the big one does look like pigweed or the like....

At least online, just like all the others that have pink poppies. Swallowtail Garden Seeds does not have Linum lewisii. To give them the benefit of the doubt they may be calling it ''common flax''. Their pink poppies are in a mixture, not sold separately. Since pink poppies are fairly common and Linum lewisii is fairly common it is curious that it is difficult to find both.

It depends entirely on what ailments you are trying to treat! Herbs are medicines, and you don't take pills and potions willy-nilly, do you? Same with herbs. I think you need to do some homework - not only to find out which herbs treat which ailment(s), but also to learn about the unwanted side-effects, which herbs to avoid in given circumstances, which ones interact with each other (and conventional meds), correct dosages etc. Herbs can be good - but you should learn about their downside before you start swilling them down! Here is the downside to Echinacea, just to start you off: Warning: Professional advice should be sought before using Echinacea medicinally. Do not use if suffering from HIV, lupus, thyroid problems, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis, myasthenia gravis, diabetes, auto-immune diseases or when pregnant, or if allergic to daisies. Excessive does may cause a scratchy, tickling sensation in the throat, and occasionally nausea and dizziness. Echinacea may trigger attacks of hayfever or asthma in susceptible people. May be toxic to the liver if used for more than eight weeks. Should not be used with drugs that can cause liver problems, such as anabolic steroids, amiodarone, methotrexate and ketoconazole. Should not be given with immuno-suppressants such as corticosteroids and cyclosporine. And you should not use Stinging Nettle if you suffer from high blood pressure. Warning about Flax: Avoid during pregnancy, especially in the early stages, as it may cause uterine bleeding. Immature seed pods can cause poisoning. Make sure that the oil you use is not the one used by artists or in preparations for timber maintenance. Medicinal linseed oil deteriorates rapidly and should be prepared fresh, often. The seeds must be crushed or the body cannot access the nutrients/medicinal virtues. Take flaxseed several hours before or after taking other medications. If suffering from diabetes or schizophrenia, flaxseed is best avoided, as they may not be easily absorbed in the body. Avoid if suffering from bowel obstruction. Make sure to drink adequate water while taking flax. Recommended amount is 250ml after each dose. Seek professional advice before using flaxseed medicinally if taking blood-thinning medications, cholesterol-lowering medications, Cyclosporine, NSAIDS (anti-inflammatory medications). Here's some info on flax seed. I just recently purchased some, and have added a little to some wheat bread and to some raspberry jam bars. I just bought wheat germ today, so I haven't used it yet. Flaxseed Information INGREDIENTS: Flaxseed Meal Flax Information Sheet: Flaxseed Meal in Recipes- You can use BobÂs Red Mill flaxseed meal as a stand in for some or all of the oil or shortening called for in a recipe. Cooks recommend a 3:1 substitution ratio. For example, 3 tbsp. Of flaxseed meal added to a recipe can replace 1 tbsp of the butter, margarine or cooking oil. When flaxseed meal is used instead of oil, baked goods tend to brown more rapidly. Vegetarian Baking- BobÂs Red Mill Flaxseed meal mixed with water can replace an egg in selected recipes like pancakes, muffins and cookies. These baked goods are gummier and chewier than usual, and the volume is decreased. When using replacement formula, test a recipe first to determine if it meets your expectations. Flax seed is very high in magnesium, zinc, iron, vitamin E, carotene, B-group vitamins, calcium, sulfur, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, silicon, copper, nickel, molybdenum, chromium, and cobalt. Also, Omegas 3 and 6, as well as lignans that enhance the immune system. I used to feed it to all my pregnant and nursing mother hammies so mom AND babies could reap the benefits of the tiny grain. It has cancer prevention properties and as well, research suggests that it aids in the eye developement of fetal and newborn babies. In a pinch (when I was out of bird feeder seed) I would feed my home made hammy food to the birds and they didn't seem to mind the flax at all. Any hammy owners out there? So I've been growing either of this two plant/weed all this time thinking it was the flaxseed that sprouted. This mean none of the seed I sowed in the first batch germinated. I didn't start with fresh soil rather got some in a small paper cup from the neighbour's garden and sowed the seeds in the paper cup to experiment.

What should I do now? Better to let it be there or could this "pigweed" be bad for the new flaxseeds spouts?

i would stick some scissors into the media... and try to snip it out ...

the larger plant.. has the potential to out compete the babes ... and might make watering a small pot hard ...

success usually comes back to water management ... and when you have one plant.. 100 times larger than the seedlings.. stuff happens ...

snipping it out.. instead of pulling it out.. we dont want to disturb the media too much.. with the babe seedlings ...

on the other hand.. if you plan on potting up the flax ... when they get to the second true set of leaves .... when you remove those from the pot.. you can just dump the monster ...

the decision is easy... when you clarify your goal ... is your goal flax??? .. if so.. then ANYTHING ELSE IN THE POT IS A WEED ... and has no real value ...

IMPE, pigweed ( & this really looks like it's in that family) forms a tuberous root that will grow back if not pulled.

You might try what I do if I want to pull something w/ the least am't of soil disturbance; place your fingers flat on the soil surface w/ the plant stem between them & keep your hand pressed firmly on the soil while pulling slowly & carefully.

Here's a photo from today. I should definitely pull out this pigweed using the method carolb_w_fl describes. I can always plant in more flaxseeds as I did recently when a heat wave destroyed a batch after which the 3 flax plants that are visible I the photo started.

I can scrape the whole thing and start over with fresh soil from the nursery but this is just a side project and want to experiment how far I can take the flaxseeds I use for edible purpose and see if I can take it to the beautiful violet flowers I see on google.

I removed the supposed pigweed today using the method carolb_w_fl described and replanted it elsewhere. It definitely was stuck hard in there even though I decidedly pulled it off half an hour after watering to make the soil soft and malleable.

I also decided to plant more flaxseeds but this time I just sprinkled them and watered afterwards instead of burying the small seeds. I'm sure they'll find their way into the soil.

Further to my last update, the dried up sprinkle in the above photo is for the purpose of compost that I took from the sunflower heads I cut yesterday for seed saving.

I wanted to know, when does a flax plant starts flowering?
