anyone have experience w/ 'the imposter'

Hello all,

I recently found 'the imposter' for sale at a local nursery and wondered about other's experiences w/ it and it's resistance to blackspot. I grow no spray and have heard it can handle the heat. The description tag from star roses said it performs best in dry climates?? I wondered if that meant it was prone to black spot.

The HelpMeFind description says it is susceptible to blackspot, but in the comment section someone who grows it describes it as very healthy, fine in heat and a bloom machine.

I saw entries of it at a local rose competition yesterday and though it was really pretty.

I get a bit of B/S on mine in the early spring when we've had a particularly rainy one. It goes away once the warm weather hits. And I don't spray. With the kinds of springs we've been having the last few yrs, and especially THIS spring, I get B/S on almost all of my roses, even the most so-called resistant ones.

THE IMPOSTER is a very cool rose. I love it, and I'm not a big fan of the singles. Mainly I like the speckles. It blooms almost all season and it's even in a slightly shady area of my yard, in a big pot. In my garden, it stays fairly compact, like barely 2ft tall and maybe 2.5ft wide. It would make a good rose for the front of a bed, or like I have it as a specimen in a nice pot.

Nova Zembla is an island off the northernmost part of Russia, in the arctic regions. I think it has a colloquial meaning of "the end of the world" -- like Siberia. So the rose is very hardy. It is a rugosa hybrid and has beautiful blush (whitish pink) flowers, something like New Dawn, and with a heavenly clove-like scent, inherited from its rugosa parent. It is a sport of Conrad F. Meyer which is slightly darker pink. There used to be several specimens of it in the old Brooklyn Botanic Rose Garden, pruned to within an inch of their lives. To say it is a climber is a pleasant fiction. The truth is less attractive, for Nova Zembla and its parent have some severe drawbacks in their manner of growth. I used to grow this rose, so I know. 1) Even with excellent culture at the BBG, it was not all that floriferous. 2) It has tall stout canes, about the diameter of your fist, armed with thickly-set, truly vicious thorns from top to bottom. The foliage (as I grew it) was not especially attractive, profuse, nor healthy. 3) It blooms only at the very tippy tips of those tree-trunk-like canes. The head of the BBG rose garden in the 1980s was a devote of pruning and he kept his plants to five feet, and fairly presentable. Also, if you live in zone 4 it might not grow as tall. The scent is delicious. So why not try it. If you don't like it you can do what I did and get rid of it. I thought it was a hazard in my small city back yard, after accidentally cutting myself on it more than once. Some of the pics. on Helpmefind also reveal its manner of bloom. Picked up 3 of them this weekend... the variegated foliage and smaller height were just too appealing to pass up ('Silver Sword' looks pretty much the same, just bigger). I can't find much on them though -- does anyone else grow them?

Pac, the flavor was good and sweet but it didn't have the berry flavor of the true bloods. It is a red valencia, not a true blood. It got a nice dark red rind and also dark red inside. I think the fruit ripened later than the other bloods. I really didn't treat it much differently than my other citrus trees to get it to get red. I leave them out until late fall but bring them all in as temperatures reach the mid to low 30s. I keep my greenhouse low temperature at about 58-60°F. I have Sanguinelli, Moro, Tarrocco, Budd and Vaniglia Sanquigno also. They are all still pretty young but all have gotten fruit with good color even though they go into my greenhouse in late fall. I have quite a few mandarines and some lemons and limes (which I bring in a little earlier as I keep them warmer). I had some die back on some of my citrus this winter, but I had a hard time controlling aphids on them. Now that they are outside they are growing strong and filling in again, and have no aphids or other insect problems so far this spring/summer. All have small fruits on them and continue to flower. I think the Smith Red will be a nice addition to your collection as the Red coloring is nice. If you want the berry flavor though you should get the Moro, Tarrocco or Sanguinelli. Cory

My Imposter is the between the pool and the sweeper so it gets tromped on, splashed on and receives an undesirable amount of reflected light from that water. It's been in that spot for three years and I believe it does so well there because it's a low growing shrub with excellent leaf canopy. That sentence right there is also used to explain spider mites in parts of my no-spray garden but The Imposter rarely shows signs of them. Blackspot isn't a problem in this area, of course, but heat and dry are. I see this rose at local rose shows so it's also popular amongst exhibitors.

I have no personal experience with it but saw it looking beautiful on a brutally hot August day last year in Southern California.

Mine does well in a hot, dry spot with full sun all day. It has stayed small and constantly blooms. Very pretty rose.

Oh good, I'm so glad to hear these reports. I just got one from Vintage because the picture was so captivating. Now I'm even happier about that impulse.

Beth (or anyone else who is growing The Imposter in a pot), can you tell me how big the pot is that you are using? I'm always leery of putting things into pots because it makes me that much more responsible for perfecting the medium to provide whatever they need, but....some roses are just so gorgeous in pots, and I like pots, and....sheesh, everyone else seems to be able to do it....

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.
