Soil test extras

Went to my local extension today to get the stuff necessary to mail in a soil test. The standard test is Nutrient(P,K,Ca,Mg,Cu,Mn,Fe,B), acidity. Limestone and fertilizer recommendations are provided based on results. Reports are sent to me and the extension so that I can call with questions if needed.

For an extra fee, $20.00, they will test the above, plus soluble salt levels, organic matter content, and texture class(texture is estimated by feel, where as the a more expensive test is quantified, but I don't really see the need.)

Would this be helpful and recommended? The paper states the extra test as a problem solver, so therefore the question. seems to me that it would be good to know.

Do I have a problem? Last year I would have said yes as the plants were all new and small. But to be fair they were small mail order plants. This year they are looking much better, though I am not sure just how they should be doing.

So... do you recommend to do the extra test?

Thanks!

Ken
