Problem with new Mutabilis plants

Just got back from RU with 10 new roses a week ago. Most are doing well in their new pots but I got two Mutabilis to replace the one I lost last year to spider mites. Leaves are turning yellow/brown and one of them has a black stem. They are small plants so before I start hacking away at them I need to know what is wrong.

I gave them some Miracle Grow. Is it permissible to spray them for fungicides when they are this small?

I don't see a great deal to worry about. The brownish-yellow leaves are the older ones; the younger ones are green and healthy. If the brown stem has leaves further up I'd leave it alone; if not, I'd cut it out. I think your little band is probably fine.

Doesn't look like a big deal to me, plant is just a little stressed. How are you doing the watering? That's usually the problem with plants in pots.

The old one here was planted in a raised area between this house and the one uphill to upholster a white vinyl fence and reduce the blazing reflected light into the master bedroom. Year before last, an enormous xylosma tree next door dried up and out right died. It was only about ten feet away from the crown of Mutabilis, on the other side of the fence. Last year, 80% of the thickest, oldest wood of Mutabilis fried and turned brown. I thought perhaps I'd forgotten to water it during an extreme heat spell, so I have been watering it religiously. It seemed to rebound, but now the remaining growth is crisping. I think perhaps there is oak root fungus in that area or something as no chemicals have been dumped or used. Fortunately, the Mutabilis layered itself a bit further down the raised planter. I've severed it from the main dying plant and have to pot it today. Other than this, I have never seen a Mutabilis die from anything other than being murdered by neglect or dumb mistakes. Kim

Jade plant problem...I am new to this!

Lauren: a red rim around the leaves indicates that the plant has received a lot of bright light - our jades spend the winter in the house and the leaves slowly loose their red, then when we put them out on the patio in the summer, the red comes back. A leaf that turns yellow and mushy... has your jade been exposed to a lot of cold recently? Under normal circumstances in the house, with lots of good light, that should not keep happening. But I would say: don't worry - jades are pretty well impossible to kill. The only thing you need to be concerned about is to not overwater. We give ours a drink only when the leaves start to look a little wrinkly... a sign that moisture is really low. About 3 or 4 times per winter is plenty. No kidding :)

Yeah, tip one, get the trees off of those stakes....they're too close to the trunk. Re-site the stakes at the edge of the container and loosely tie off to a branch. Secondly, the orange looks fine. And it's blooming nicely, too. Thirdly, am I seeing correctly that the top of the root-ball is exposed? Fourth, the Meyer is most likely hungry for some nutrients. I would supplement the fertilizer for both trees. Lastly, if the potting mix holds too much moisture (hard to imagine in zone 10), that could lead to yellowing leaves. Just to keep in mind. Josh

Like Ingrid, I see no cause for concern.
Older leaves will drop by the wayside. The newer leaves look great.

if you have concerns about their health, you should contact RU. Not only are they responsible for the quality delivered, but they are also very knowledgeable.

Thanks for the responses !! I will just watch then. I have emailed the photo to RU and yes, they are very good. I will update the thread with their response.

If you can move them, just keep them in a dry spot with good air flow, imho.

I don't know which fungicide you use, but I do spray my little roses if the spring is wet and fungusy. It really helps me.

I don't know your conditions, but I do have disease problems this time of year that can cause substantial cane loss in little roses. Yours don't look really bad; I agree with the others! For me, I always get scared of worsening/spreading, though. Usually, after the rains lighten up, everything grows very well, fortunately.

Thanks, Meredith !! I got a response from RU and they suggested pretty much the same thing as all of you, though they didn't rule out something fungal. I removed the obviously dying leaves and will watch for more problems. They said I could use a fungicide at half strength on them if it continues. It is a wet spring in Atlanta.

I will update as I go to help others in the future.

The plants look so much better !!! Must have been the shock of going from the greenhouse to the real world. The fertilizer and fungicide have helped and they are getting more new growth from several canes. Thanks for everyone's help, including my favorite nursery, Roses Unlimited ...
