Sounds like a Tradescantia pallida, common name is Purple Heart. As for the biblical name, I have older relatives who call it Moses in the rushes. Here is a link that might be useful: Purple Heart plant

I'm back with an update after a 3-week break. As you will see in the photo below, my 3-leaf plant is now merely a 3-stalk plant with the normal pairs of leaves on every stalk and branch. It seems as though the 3-leaf trait was only carried by the main stem. Once I piched it back, the main stem ceased all vertical growth, but 3 branches grew where it was pinched instead of the normal 2. Those 3 branches have grown into 3 very healthy stalks, but unfortunately do not share the same 3-leaf trait. Oh well. Disappointed but not discouraged, I decided to try again. I had no idea what the chances were of getting a 3-leaf again, but I figured it was worth a shot. I quickly ordered another packet of the same seeds from the same supplier and germinated them. I'm only 2 days into having some sprouts, but it looks like I may have another 2 or 3 3-leafs coming up! If this is true, it obviously has something to do with this particular strand or batch, because I also germinated a 2nd round of 4 other basil cultivars and not a single one of them has produced a 3-leaf yet...only these Red Rubins. Now, moving forward. If some of these new sprouts do truly turn out to be 3-leafs, I would love to be able to keep this trait going. I'm definitely not going to pinch the main stem so soon (if at all). What I'm curious about is if there is some way to induce branch growth without pinching and sacrificing the main stem. I'm not implying that the branches would have anymore chances of being 3-leaf branches, but at least I'd still have a 3-leaf main stem and a plant with some branches on it. Thoughts? Oh, you're welcome, 'shades'!! Anytime! I really thought you had to have a B.A.!! Your gardens are so beautiful and you have such wonderful specimens of so many of the ones we all love. Slugs--ugh!! I know--they do make 'the season' less than stellar--depending on the rain. The rain sure makes the hosta grow and look so hearty but the slugs sure seem to love the rain, and then our hosta as dessert!!! Gak!

I don't know why the native grasses are so stunted on our property. I'm sure irrigation has something to do with it. Plants of the Southwest has a giant sacaton that is over 6' tall, and I see deergrass that is already 4' high and just starting to put out flowering stems, but these are all in places where they water regularly. Mine were watered during their first year, then just sparingly after that. Of course we also have all the critters who crop everything to the ground during the dry season which runs October to June. I'm mystified at why Karl F and Karley don't do well for you. KF is planted all over the city. If it's watered regularly it can top 5'. Mine is about 4' with pretty seed heads like a bunch of masai spears. Last year Karley was about 5', a huge fountain of muted rose plumes. We don't have rain in the fall, so it stayed tall and graceful. I had to move it, it was too big for the bed. It survived the move but it may take a year to settle down. I have Korean feather reed too, also Avalanche and Eldorado. All seem to be surviving which counts as success here. They're about 2' (Avalanche and Korean fr, both from last year), and 1' (Eldorado, this year). Nothing is watered heavily. All of these are doing better than the natives which mostly are barely above the ground. I have Mexican feather grass and New Mexican feather grass which are 2-3', very striking, but they're the exceptions. The big joke is ricegrass. I have 3 from PoSW, planted last year, which are little tufts about 4" tall. But with the higher rain this year, ricegrass has sprung up everywhere, looking a million times better than my PoSW sprouts. And the best of all is the clump growing in a crack in the road, a gorgeous spray of bright green and silver.
