Shrub ideas for late summer sunny border

Hi there. I have a problem border that I need to redo. I'd like to plant an informal hedgerow that will fill in quickly and crowd out the weeds. The border is backed by evergreens and faces south so it gets lots of great sun. Acidic clay soil that drains well. Something that blooms or is otherwise attractive in late summer/early fall would be great. I was thinking about hydrangeas but was worried about too much sun, maybe the paniculatas would be OK. Cost is an issue, too! Tried a line of knock-out roses-- what a mistake, they were much too slow growing and quickly taken over by the thuggish weeds. Any ideas? Thanks!
