Cotinus var. 'Golden Spirit'

According to information that I have gathered from Internet sources, I believe that the shrub COTINUS, specifically the cultivar named 'Golden Spirit' is regarding to be free of leaf scorch/burn issues. Having said that, am I the only one that has found this info to be misleading; indeed false? My four foot specimen, although growing lustily, has suffered significant leaf scorch on more than a few stems for the past two summers here in Northeast WI. No amount of preventative watering has had a beneficial effect on the plant in the way of lessening or eliminating the problem.

Mine hasn't scorched in 98 degree temps. Are you sure you're looking at scorch or verticillium wilt?

Mine grows in full sun up here in MA. After initial planting some of the established leaves burned, but none of the new growth leaves have. This is probably due to the nursery having it in less than full sun when I bought it. The plant then adjusted well to its new spot. Also keep in mind that this plant needs alot of sun to maintain the golden color. Mine has for the most part even now, but I have seen others grown with more shade that turned just light green overall.

I've had Cotinus 'Golden Spirit' for at least 6 years. It's a fairly narrow shrub and about 8 feet tall, in full sun. I don't remember it being slow growing. I have a Clematis 'Roguchi' growing into it, and the combo is spectacular. If you got it as a small twig, it would of course take about a season to kick in. And it it's grown 4 inches this early in the season, it should take off this year. Put it in the ground.

Hi bfrederick, It blooms on old wood, so this spring I pruned back only about half of the branches and sure enough, last year's branches bloomed. I kindof like the mixture of blooms on the old taller branches and bright new growth on the shorter pruned branches. Best of luck!

Thank you F&F. I have read about 'Pink Champagne' but I haven't seen them in any of the nurseries around here yet. It looks very pretty. I'll keep my eye out for it. The 'Young Lady' looks great too although I was a little discouraged bc a local nursery has a bunch of these available (the only place i have seen them) but for some reason they weren't looking all that great. Its probably the nurseries fault/improper care but I want to see a healthier looking Young Lady before I decide to add it to my yard. It's funny bc as beautiful as these shrubs are, I don't see them in yards around here. Yesterday I was driving by a marina and happened upon a purple variety and insisted my husband turn around and pull over so I can get out and take a closer look. It was beautiful. With or without the smoke they are gorgeous. Thanks for the response again :)

I have one also - I agree as to not being as vigorous as other forms. Mine has grown very slowly but really adds a sunny color to the garden and the fall color was outstanding. The 5 gallon plants at the nursery look pretty robust, but I didn't feel the need for a second mortgage to acquire this plant :0)

Seems to be more or less sun-resistant here. Quite a few of them around now. I tried one early in the game which did burn, but also did not last - so it could have been something like Verticillium.

In reply to "laceyvail" suggestion that perhaps my Cotinus var. 'Golden Spirit' is affected with verticillium wilt.... the affected leaves do not appear to be wilting but rather crisped/dehydrated/scorched about the edges eventially drying completely on the stem of the plant. This crisping of the leaves occurs from the top down along the entire stem of the plant looking so unsightly that I chose to remove the dried leaves by physically stripping the leaf petiole from the stem of the shrub. Further Internet checking confirms a susceptibility of this plant to Verticillium Wilt...... especially if grown in fertile soil. I will cut a stem of the plant and look for further evidence that VW is indeed the problem but I am not optimistic given the seriousness of the disease and the Cotinus's vulnerability.

Mine has held up well with regard to leaf scorch. My issue with the plant is that it never flowers. I have two plants for over 5 years and have never seen any flowers.

Verticillium wilt produces a firing of the shoots as you have described.

"Var." is not used with cultivar names and the cultivar in this instance is 'Ancot' and not 'Golden Spirit'. There is no 'Golden Spirit' smokebush. GOLDEN SPIRIT is a marketing device used to sell the cultivar 'Ancot'.

I too have this same issue with the Ancot varietal. The spring growth is vibrant and healthy followed by scorching or bleaching of the plant mid summer.
