Too young?

It's about 5 feet tall. Would that be too young?

It just start flowering today here, though buds were present about 3 weeks ago.
Mine have 5 hours of midday sun.

I bought one of these last spring, it was about the same height. It had only a couple flower clusters last fall. This year it has many more, mostly arising from growth from the oldest stems. So, maybe it takes awhile. The flower clusters have been visible for a couple of weeks or so, & only one cluster has opened so far.

P.S. A small-town arboretum, in Pierce, Nebraska, has a fanstastic specimen of this plant growing as a shrub (dense and full like a lilac) instead of a tree. Last fall its red I-forget-the-correct-name things, the part that shows after the flowers fall off, pretty much covered the plant and were absolutely stunning.

Always decidedly shrubby in character, the tree concept being based on its sometimes largish size.

Mine is just starting to bloom. I got it at a plant auction this spring. It gets a lot of sun, all morning from dawn and a couple hours in the afternoon. I have been careful to water regularly since our rains quit in Aug. It came from a very good nursery, stands about 4ft tall with good branch thickness. Not sure of age, but is showing peeling bark. Shrub was promoted at sale with the lure of red color in fall after late summer blooming. Supposed to last quite a long time.
Is yours showing the peeling bark? It might be a sign of age needed for blooming. My mother also has one and hers is blooming this year. She did not remember blooms last summer. She mentioned the peeling bark while I was visiting and asked me if bush was in trouble. Neither of us could remember the peeling bark from last year or when I planted it. Hers is in it's second year at her sunny location, also about 4ft.

I planted a four-footer in early spring, purchased online from forestfarm. It has some peeling bark, and put on at least a foot of new growth on each branch during the spring and early summer.

Only one branch is making flower buds (a few clusters), but the other branches are putting on more new growth now that the temps are not so severe.

Maybe next year yours will be mature enough to make a flower or two, and then explode the following year.

Definitely don't give up on it -- It is a great shrub with or without flowers. One of my favorites.

Oh, I'm not giving up on it at all, just wondered if anything was wrong that I should be doing something about.
It does have the peeling bark on the trunk. I don't think it's put on much growth since last fall--definitely not a foot's worth.

I guess a little patience is in order....

Mine is not flowering either. I am assuming mine doesn't get enough sun...a couple of hours morning and a couple of hours afternoon. I don't mind though because I bought it for its form and bark and to create some quick shade that was needed in a hurry over shade perennials when some tall pines were cut down nearby. Its a beauty.
