PVC houses will do fine, but I would not expect them to have as long a life span as the other construction methods. If you use regualr white PVC, the exposure to sunlight will eventually make the pipes brittle. BUT ( I always have a "but"), You really cannot beat the cost for a hobby style greenhouse.

Below is a link to a greenhouse kit sold by ACF greenhouses. they also have a page linked to that page showing how to use trnbuckles and guy wires to stiffen the greenhouse.

How big of a greenhouse are you thinking of? I noticed you have posted another thread on here about "What's the cheapest way to heat a greenhouse."

Well, the two things realy go hand in hand. If you don't have a greenhouse and are wanting to get one then you are very lucky!

Many of the ideas on here about using cheap heat/solar heat are from people who already have a greenhouse and are looking for ways to reduce heating costs.

My advice to you is consider using wood instead of PVC pipe. Ordinary plain old pine 2x4s in 8ft lengths are about $2.50 3/4 inch PVC pipe is about the same for a 10ft length.

Building something out of 2x4s gives you much more flexibility and options than a poly covered PVC pipe framed hoop house.

Tell us how big it is going to be and what you want to use it for.

Mine is sitting out in the yard, it is full of junk at the moment. The new poly is on it, the inflation blower is all set up. The extension cord for power is running across the yard, I found enough hose pipe to get water to it, but I am not using it for growing anything yet.

Try getting creative with wood!

If you read through it the whole thing is made of PVC pipe because of weight. It is built on a roof.

Imagine the Square Support Structure made out of 2x4s and I feel someone could make a very good hybrid structure. Make the 2x4 (2x3?) a permanent structure and just put the PVC pipe and poly outer structure on in spring and summer.

I have a 12x30 hoop style GH with inflated double poly. I heat it with a natural gas 30,000 btu ventless wall heater. I modified a PVC plan and used ½" EMT (electical metal conduit), at fist it was only 12x14 and then I added on another sixteen feet. I love it. EMT costs less then PVC or lumber, will last forever and is easy to bend. My GH has with stood 75mph winds and 12" of snow (that is all that would accumulate before it slid off). The 12x14 size cost me a total of $431 which included the inflation motor and two auto vents. Hope this helps.

I tried, the first 12', of the GH with ½" EMT and the other half, 16', with eletrical UV PVC. The PVC fittings became brittle and broke in a strong wind, the PVC pipe did not brake though. Also the poly melted to the south facing PVC during the hot summer and then ripped when the wind blew. I replaced the PVC with the EMT that fall.

I wa thinking about a 6x8 greenhouse but I could go bigger. I'm only 13 and so I dont realy care if it lasts a long time. I wanted to use it for tropical fruits(citrus ect.),'tropicals', bonsai, and tropical bonsai. That's what I want to be able to do anyway.

Flash, I recently purchased the Weatherguard 6'x8' GH for $229 including shipping from Northern Tool. I wonder if a good PVC greenhouse can be built for less. The Weatherguard has a steel frame and woven poly cover so should also last a lot longer than a PVC / poly GH, I'd think. The replacement covers are $64 for 1 end and $160 for the complete set including shipping, purchased from the manufacturer.

While in your zone, that sounds great, I question and wonder how that would be in zone 6 where Flash is located.

But if it would stand up, then I can see your method as being an excellent one, especially the expandability factor.

I live near Salt Lake City, Utah but close to the Great Salt Lake which tempers the minimum cold, thus the 7a zone, otherwise it would be a zone 6. As for snow fall, we usually get plenty and once we got 24" but only 12" will accumulate on the GH before it slides off.

I have baskets hanging from the center frame and it shows no real stress. I do think the EMT is the way to go plus you can run your eletrical down the center for lighting and meet city codes. If I knew how I would post some pics of it.

Flash, I just noticed two things. First is in order to make the bows work you will need to be at least 10' wide preferrably 12' otherwise you will have to do some cutting and still might not make it work. Second, the $431 was the cost of the 30' GH. You can cut the cost of it by more then half for a 12x12.

Good ideas! I just might use EMT and will probably build bigger. What it the best greenhouse style, in your oppinion?

I like attached greenhouses as they reduce my heating costs in winter, give a nice view and don't need boots on to check them out.

I don't have a outside door that I can attach it to.

even just against the wall will probably save you heating. if you have a good stretch of south facing wall just put the greenhouse against that.

My husband is going to try his hand at a 3/4" pvc greenhouse with 6 mil clear drop cloth for the plastic. It needs to be at least 5ft 5 inches, I'm 5'4". I has to be 5'x9', he has about 6 runs of 3/4 pvc and a bunch of x shaped fittings, any suggestions?

I built a 10x12 out of treated 4x4's and 1 big sheet of 6mil plastic.
Just drilled holes into the 4x4, stuck the pvc in, bent them to meet each side, connect with a 4way (except on the ends with a T). Draped the plastic over, clipped it to the pvc, viola. Cheap
Going strong for 2 years now.
