Cold Tonight....

so it's going down to 40 tonight. I had to bring in my veggie plants I just got delivered. I am worried about my roses. I was just remarking on how well they have finally leafed out after the cold spring became warmer. They have literally doubled up in a week. Now this. I'm worried that the buds that are forming now will be distorted from the cold. Sigh, it's always something...

Oh and some deer have been using my yard as a dessert buffet. Yeah!!!!

Buford, hopefully you will be okay. We had a light freeze in Dallas a few weeks ago, my tomato plants looked like they were goners so replaced them, and lo and behold a few days later they came back up, just tiny plants by this time. The freeze has held the roses back a bit, but finally they're starting to bloom! It did get my peaches though.

Most brugs can survive a few hours as low as 27 degrees. They lose their leaves and any tender new growth, but usually bounce right back. If your brugs are small enough you can toss a sheet over them to protect them from frost---I do this a lot in the fall.

@6:00 am this morning it was 26 and dropped down to 25 right at sunrise. Thank goodness it did not get down to the forcasted lows, I just checked on my citrus trees and it looks like the frost cloth saved them so far, and my blooms look alright too. It is above freezing as I write this, just one more night and it will begin to warm up.

Owie, Well, it must be nice to stay warmer than the forecast. That only happens here in August. LOL Have fun with your new Min-Max thermometer and keep us entertained with your annal details of every temperature change. LOL Randy, I bet the plants are whispering excitedly to one another and asking themselves who gets to go first when the slow exodus begins. : ) After tonight, the 40s pretty much go away for us and we're looking at 50s/70s which is some of my favorite weather. As for rain, let it rain, let it rain, let it rain! Summer will be here all too soon and we'll forget what rain is. Should we start taking bets on whether or not the spring rains are going to flood your creek area again? That seems to have happened a lot the last couple of years. Dawn

Sure glad I waited to plant my tomatoes and tropicals. Everything is hardened off and ready. I've run out of room under the lights and some plants are suffering inside with little light. Hope it warms up and stays warm soon. Warm enough that is. I'd prefer it didn't get over 85 all summer but fat chance for that!

A little "chilly" this morning but not as bad as I thought it might get. The warm sun feels great. I don't think it bothered the roses at all. Slow them down by a few days. My peppers and matters look fine this morning. Not as bad as last years late "surprise".

There was ice on the deck this morning. I had left outside some new 1-gallon plants, fresh from the warm RU greenhouse. They will probably be OK, but I should have taken more care. My garden is often 5 degrees colder than the forecast and the official temperature for Asheville.

Here too. Upper thirties last night, and all the roses are budded. I covered the cukes.

After an awful cold snap all last week and some mid 20s degree lows, your 40 degree low sounds pretty good. Still, everything weathered the snap pretty well (a few frosted leaves), except the magnificent show the magnolia was about to put on. It's now covered in brown blobs. Diane

Yep...here too! Everything went back into the greenhouse for last night and tonight. I didn't see any damage on the ones in the ground this morning. Hopefully, tonight will be warmer than originally thought.

Ken, don't say that word!!!!! It should be in the 70s and we'll be lucky to get into the 60s next week.

It is spring, isn't it?

I woke up to find I had to scrape the car windows this morning to go to the nursery for our rose society meeting. It did THAT WORD last night!

I wouldn't worry about the roses. 40 may slow them down a bit but it shouldn't do any damage. I haven't moved any of mine to shelter and we've been down in the low 30s a couple of nights. I did some more pruning this afternoon and they all looked fine.

Going down to around 29 degrees here tonight...
But that doesn't hurt the roses or anything here anyhow...
We wait until 3rd week of May to plant tenders...

Snow in Chicago following the rains. Flooding, sink holes, power outages. Putting grocery bags on tops of tree roses. So worried..don't fuss with Mother Nature.
