Need to Replace Veteran's Honor

Although I love the long lasting blooms, this plant has always been a rust magnet in my garden and I am tired of fighting it every year. The shrub is tall and gangly, just not very attractive. What other red would you recommend that has a nicer shrub shape, is not as effected by disease, has nice blooms and fragrance? CJ

'Firefighter' aka 'Hacienda' aka 'Red 'n Fragrant'. But I am biased. Its fragrance has completely seduced me.

Veteran's Honor is the trade name for 'JACopper'. I believe 'JACopper' currently has a PPAF status, which would make vegetative propagation, for any reason, illegal without permission from the patent applicant. Thought you might like to know...

Oh gosh, mine is a monster! It gets a good 6 feet tall every season no matter how far I have to prune it back in the spring. But it's typically tall and narrow like most HTs. It blooms in flushes with about an 6 week cycle so I usually only get 3 flushes. But they're gorgeous and huge and last on the bush for at least a week if I let them. It's fairly healthy although it will spot some but it's never defoliated on me. It's potted on the patio where it gets the best sun. It's been very winter hardy too. All in all I'm very pleased with mine.

You are waiting to see if this characteristic happens on anything else that grows from this stem. Label it, deadhead it by snapping off this flower when it dies, and see what happens. If it is a color sport, meaning that it is a durable mutation, it should produce more flowers like the one you have now. Waiting is the best (and hardest) thing to do. Even though I have good success rooting roses, I would never cut off a sport after the first flower ... if the cutting failed to root, the sporting portion of the bush could be lost. It's better to let it grow a bit so there's more material to work with if you need to propagate it. Connie P.S. I sure hope it's a sport. A friend of mine registered a pink sport of Miss Flippins .. it was hers to name and market. It's exciting.

Veteran's Honor has been one of those roses in my garden that is a true fence-sitter. The blooms are magnificent, but the shrub shape is tall and gangly with large leaves. I have had endless problems with BS and rust. The first part of the season, I want to shovel prune it, but when the hotter weather of the summer hits and it starts putting out the blooms, I just can't get rid of it. A love-hate relationship. Am trying out Deep Secret and Alec's Red. Deep Secret is gorgeous -- saw it at Heirloom and was impressed. We shall see how it does. CJ

My most disease resistant fragrant red here in the fog zone of coastal California is Lasting Love. Very shiny foliage with zero rust or mildew, and we get lots of both here.

From what I have seen of it in Woodland Park in Seattle, Opening Night looks good. Other good reds are Precious Platinum and Olympiad.

Royal William for a dark red.

Grande Amore for a bright red. Almost disease immune, and outstading vigour and bloom production, but lacks fragrance.

I'm in the SF Bay Area, and I got 'Beloved', AKA 'Cesar E. Chavez' last year, and it seems really disease resistent. But then, my Vet's Honor is disease resistent here too.

HMF lists Royal William as zone 7 and above. Do you keep the plant in a heated green house?
