Weird Growth on New Roses

I received my order from Rogue Valley 2 weeks ago and have kept the bands in my zipper greenhouse until I have time to move them into 1g pots this weekend. I checked on them yesterday and they are just growing like crazy already! One of the roses, Callista, has some really strange growth and I was wondering if somebody would be able to enlighten me as to what it is. I also have the same kind of growth pattern happening on cuttings I rooted last year of Martha Gonzlaez and White Pearl in Red Dragon's Mouth. Its almost like the new growth is twice the length of last year's older canes....Maybe they're just happy, but I am curious...

In this picture of Callista, you can see the red new growth begin around the middle of the picture...the green cane ends, and the red new growth emerges

They look WONDERFUL!

Is it the red-colored new growth that bothers you??? You'll see that PARTICULARLY on Tea Roses. Some Chinas, but WOW THE TEAS really really do that!

It's one of the things I really love.

We've had some particularly cold weather for this time of year here. All of my roses have new red growth on them, but because of the cold, they haven't really progressed beyond that. So I have a bunch of sticks with red tips. I admit, it does look kind of cool. Luckily, even with hard freezes every night this week, there is no damage. The roses are just in suspended state until it warms up.

Pretty orchid! Looks to be some type of fungal/mold thing to me, but not too serious. I'd either remove the affected roots or douse with hydrogen peroxide or some other anti-fungus treatment (or both). Also, take it out to the plastic wrap, that won't help it to acclimate. If anything it would be detrimental by stopping airflow, which may be the reason for the fungus/mold in the first place. Good luck, Bob

Thanks, Buford and Ann. I guess I'll just dig and hack at the roots the best I can and hope it stays gone -- or that new growth is healthy. Ann, you certainly are welcome to use my photo and descriptioin -- I'm flattered! I sure am heartbroken to lose that rose. I originally bought it because it was described as a climber, but in fact it grew very slowly, and it's lucky I also planted a lilac along that side of the fence. The Aloha would never have spread out and covered it like the New Dawn did the other side (I live in a city neighborhood of ugly chain-link-fenced yards that I was trying to conceal and pretty-up), but after about eight years it had finally grown to about six feet tall and was glorious. So I only had a few years to really enjoy it. And now that spot is going to look bare and ugly.... Thanks again. It's been years since I spent any time on GardenWeb and now I wonder why -- it's such a wonderful place.

They are not getting enough sunlight. Cactus are mainly meant to be grown outside. They are stretching for sunlight. This forum (cactus gallery) is mainly for showing pictures. If you post under cactus and succulents, more questions get answered there. I just happen to stop by. Not many people post here. Hope this helps! Just a tip for the future, if you have the sandy loam typical of the Central Valley, that is nearly ideal soil as it is, maybe needing just some sulfur for a pH adjustment, and a shovelful of manure. It would be better not to backfill with bagged mixes, although bagged mixes would not likely cause your problem. If you added cups of phosphate to the hole, I would go back to my original suspicion about zinc--that is, if you are seeing what I described (the tip stopped growing and stunted shoots came out around it). You may need to consult a soil/plant testing service. Since it happened after transplanting, it seems like soil chemistry may the the cause.

Thanks Buford and Jeri, I guess it concerned me because of the rate at which it grew! This is the first season I've had potted deliveries this early and I guess it shicked me that the plant doubled in size within 2 weeks! I guess I should be happy :)

It looks great to me. My Pink Pets that I rooted last year are doing the same thing already this spring. Now, If the rest of my roses would jump like that I would one happy camper.
