Celebration of Old Roses - El Cerrito - May 17

The Celebration of Old Roses in El Cerrito will begin on Sunday, May 17, at 11 am. Every year, people throng at the doors, wanting to come in and see the roses and lovely items for sale. Would you like to be inside, rather than out? All you need to do is come and help set up! We work hard, but itÂs lots of fun!

Help is needed most from 9-11, setting out roses and arranging things and cleaning up at 4:30 when the day ends. We also need people who are willing to work for an hour in the kitchen throughout the day.

So here's how to support the Celebration, and to make it better than ever -

1. Bring your roses, including any that you'd like to identify. Bring them early enough that we have time to get them out.

2. Save your clear glass jars and bottles, and donate them to the cause. Spaghetti sauce jars work fine.

3. Come help set up. Let us add your name to the list of volunteers, and we'll let you through those doors!

4. Help in the kitchen or to clean up. Let me know if you are willing to do either task.

You can email me at anitac @ surewest.net (no spaces), and I will pass your name on to the organizer. It's a wonderful event - hope that many of you who came to the Sacramento cemetery open garden can also make it to El Cerrito!

I attended Celebration of Old Roses many years ago and it was so enjoyable. I'm so glad to know it is still going on. Old roses rule!

It's one of my favorite events in the whole world.
(Anita, I think I'm already on the List, but you can make sure -- and Clay will be there, as well.)

OH! And once again the "Local Groups" table will offer a silent auction of a few very special roses.

It was great to meet and talk roses with Anita, Catspat, and Romogen yesterday! Highlight of the event for me was Anita's talk about the cemetery and its roses We got to see and smell Bloomfield Abundance (the one now thought to be *real* -- which resembles Mlle. Cecile Brunner not one bit) and the lovely Jesse Hildreth, among others, and learn the stories behind some of the amazing roses of the garden. Now I want to go back again. Some of the roses on the display tables that made the strongest impression on me this year were Jaune Desprez, Henri Martin, and Clementina Carbonieri. Incredible fragrance and loveliness, all of them. And oh my, the albas and gallicas and on and on . . . . I was very interested in Etoile de Hollande and spent some time searching for it at Miriam's booth, with Romogen's help; it turned out to be the climbing version, which I had to pass up, sadly. Nancy, I'm glad you took one home with you! I was pretty good overall and bought only Mons. Tillier. I have no room for him, either, but I weakened. I do love that rose, so . . . . I was very sorry to miss hearing Gregg speak, but as I was the only person who showed up at noon to hear him, it wasn't to be. Maybe next year. Sheba

Hi Anita, Michael and I always help Gregg selling roses. It's huge all day job. We might find some time to help though. We'll be bringing roses and I have a nice book to donate to the raffle. It will be such fun!

Just bumping this up to remind folks to come to El Cerrito on Sunday if you can, and stop by a bit earlier to help, too. If you plan to help, you need to be on the volunteer list to get through the door. Just let me know.

Ugh, I look forward to this every year, but have survived to now by luck. My mom sent me the notice last night.

I've already bought a ticket to the Hidden Gardens of Pleasanton tour. We're completely redoing the front and back yards and thought I'd donate to a good cause, Valley Humane Society, and maybe get some inspiration from some private gardens.

This rose show is the best and most interesting I've been to, with the one at Lake Merritt in Oakland also very good. I will miss it.
