Black and falling leaves on Viburnum nudum

'Winterthur' - bought 3 a week ago, 2 berrying and a pollinator. One of the berrying looks like this now, do I have reason to believe it will die? (The other berrier has the expected red fall color, and the pollinator is ok with green leaves for now.)

Ran short of water.

Most likely the water runs out of the pot the instant you water.

If so, the potting mix has shrunk away from the pot. So soak in a deep container -- max 20 minutes to avoid drowning roots -- then remove from water and drain.

Thanks jean, I suspected as much. Soaked it, planted it in, watered well & will continue to...

I am almost certain they will survive, but they may just limp along this season. I wouldn't give up on them, but I wouldn't expect much of a foliage show this year. I saw some of those at a bot garden last fall, and the foliage was so dark red it was turning toward black. And it was gorgeous. I might expect them to lose the foliage they have now and then resprout some new stuff, but not a lot. Good choice -- great fall color. Give them a chance and don't let them dry out during the high summer.

I have one that I picked up at HD three years ago. I'd rather have a native one but this was only $5. It is V. plicatum maresii. Mine is in part shade but I think it may need more sun. It only bloomed on the side of the plant that gets more sun. It needs to be pruned too. I didn't this spring and it has gotten enormous. I love it though and even DH who mostly doesn't care commented that he liked the texture of the leaves. I have spots picked out for a couple more different kinds including Leatherleaf (Viburnum rhytidophyllum) and Prague (Viburnum x pragense) for a mixed evergreen hedge along the back to replace some poorly sited spruces.

Sorry. I wonder if I did something wrong or if Photobucket is just down. I have four different v. dentatums and they don't bloom at the same time. I thought it was strange that my Chicago Luster had so many berries and the others had none. I planted a couple Blue Muffins in the shade and they haven't even bloomed. I hope they will when they get bigger. The Chicago Luster has one Autumn Jazz on each side of it. I also have one plain species and another Blue Muffin that bloomed but no berries. Which viburnum did you get Gld?

Make certain that subsequent waterings are applied directly to the original rootball.

I had this response back from the nursery where I bought the vibs:

"Thanks for enclosing the pictures so I could diagnose the problem. We had the same occurrence on the plants in the yard. No, the plants are not dying. I do believe the blackening to be due to a fungus disease attacking the leaves. It started during the couple of days of cool wet weather we had recently. Now that things have dried out nothing more seems to be blackening. A fungicidal spray of either sulfur, Daconil, Mancozeb, or Neem oil would probably keep the disease from spreading if the weather repeats itself. As long as it is warm and dry the disease will not progress."
