Wire Panel Hoophouse Double Layer???

I have seen a lot of good ideas for building a hoophouse/high tunnel using fencing panels as a cheap structure to lay the plastic on.

Has anyone heard of a quick, cheap way to get a double layer with some ventilation bubbles between them on this kind of structure??? I'm lost when trying to come up with a way to do it without ruining the plastic...

If the wire is cheap and you want to double the plastic: what about doubling the wire frame as well? If you made one about 6" smaller than the other, then covered the inner frame before erecting the outer frame, then connected and sealed the two covers at the ends, you would have a nice insulating air space.

Or- Just use a clear solar pool cover as your hoop house cover. Admittedly, it's more costly than plain plastic, but would also outlast it and give you insulating.

But for ventillation, I honestly can't think of any way to mount any ventillation panels or exhaust fan, without cutting out a frame for it in the wire, perhaps reinforcing it with a wood frame.

thanks! the use of two panels is a great idea that will work for us.
we already purchased our plastic, so the pool cover isn't an option...we initially set out to build this house using bamboo, but after cutting a bunch of cane we found that the bend we needed caused the cane to crack!

I am building a 18.5' x 48' greenhouse right now. My end walls are lumber, and I have a 4' vertical side wall that is a 2x6 on the ground and a 2x4 along the top. Right now it looks a horse corral. I am hoping to be able to bend chain link top rail to make hoops for the roof. I have a greenhouse now that uses a blower for the inflated double layer of poly. I would guess that it only works because moving the air through it dries up condensation before it can turn to mold and algae. That same moisture would also rot your lumber if it wasn't treated. You can use treated lumber, but the fun part is that the arsenate in the new stuff dissolves greenhouse plastic if it comes in direct contact for a long time. I use treated, but I paint it with multiple coats of latex and try to also put down a layer of white duct tape where the plastic hits the lumber. A steep roof is actually easier to make than the typical quonset hoophouse. Check out the link to "kee clamps" below. You could build a lumber north wall and insulate that, then make the roof and sides out of straight pipe. I would stick to one layer of poly if you don't have some way to power an inflation blower. fwiw, I have seen a pic of an Amish design that is like a wind vane, except the vane is a big cone that pivots to catch the wind. It's funneled into dryer hose and used to inflate a double poly layer. You can also use the double-wall rigid poly panels, but I know they're expensive. Hey monipsych. I paid about $9.00 for the hardware: 2 10-foot 1/2" pvc tubes (cut in half to 5' length) @ $2.77/ea (Lowe's plumbing dept) 16 1/2" plastic clamps (they were 5 @ $.68) (same dept as tubes) 32 1/2" screws to attach the clamps to the planks (I had them) 8 2" screws to screw the frame together (I had them) 1 2-mil 9x12' plastic 'drop cloth' @ $3.50 (paint dept) 4 spring clamps (at Marc's - cheapies - 2 @ $.99) (or were $.99/ea in Home Depot hardware dept - Lowe's were too pricey). I already had: Bifold door, exterior semi-gloss paint to seal the door against the moisture, the cedar planks, all the screws and the sawhorses. At the end of the season I'll just unscrew the frame, remove the hoops, then just store away until next year. It took me 30 minutes to assemble. In fact, I'm making another one today to cover my WS annuals. You're in zone 6. Will you be having frost/freezes yet this year? I'm in zone 5 and it been freezing some nights. In fact frosted last night. And even though the next 6 days will be warm and above freezing at night, I'll be keeping mine up till after mid-May because here in NE OH we still get some frosts until then. Great info. Thanks! I went to Home Depot this aft, and the electrical guy there gave me the name of a local industrial supply house, which does counter sales, and has 3/3 copper and 2/3 aluminum. Awesome! My problem is solved. However, this now gives me a few more questions. 3/3 copper is $23 Can per metre. 2/3 Aluminum is $9 Can per metre. Guess which one I'm buying? :) I've got about a 90 ft. run. But I've never worked with aluminum wire before. 1. I'll double check to make sure my service panel and subpanel are aluminum compatible, but I assume so. The service panels are Siemens, 3 years old, and the sub is Cutler Hammer, bought last year. 2. I know I need to use dielectric grease, but can you explain how I need to use it? I'll feed the cable from a 100 amp breaker, screw the lugs of the breaker onto the hot conductors, etc. Do I coat both breaker lugs, the neutral bus bar connection, and the ground connection with the dielectric grease? I'll then need to coat the subpanel connections the same way? 3. The cable they sell they called AC, not NMD. It's got a pvc casing. It's not UF. The sales gent said this can be used without conduit protection, so I can run it directly into the subpanel. I'll be drilling a hole through the insulated wall of the house into the attached garage and running the cable up into the sub panel. What is the maximum bend radius 2/3 aluminum is allowed? 4. With what do I attach this pvc armoured cable to sheathing? 5. Any other gotcha's with this? I want to do everything properly, to code, but also "best practice" not just "good enough" so I really appreciate your folks help. Thanks!

Update - the power company finally sent someone out to look over the situation. To answer a few remarks, there is no water coming in through the roof or anywhere else, DH and I looked at those options when we first saw the water. Though some might think DIY means "hack job" my husband and I have been doing major building projects for about 20 years and we do know how to look for water damage and leaks. As to why the power company is doing this - we hired them to run the lines in the first place. Paid $700 for the work too. Since we are rural, the power company is usually the only one that will come out and do the jobs. The two electric companies in town are busy with residential/commercial projects and don't want to be bothered by something like this - unless they are doing the entire house. The lineman checked things over and rearranged the lines and wrapped a few of the connections. He said not to be all that concerned about water in the line as it wouldn't cause problems for a while. Since we are going into winter, I expect we'll not see any more water issues until it starts to rain in the spring. If we weren't having one of the wettest years on record, this problem may have never surfaced - I think that is what the power company is betting on. But it is an interesting thought that maybe the problem is water getting into the PVC pipe and then into a break in the line - though we couldn't put a real cap on (we can't disconnect the lines) I think we could fabricate a cover that would do the same thing. Hi All!

I'm rather new to the whole idea of extending the garden into the fall/winter season, but seeing that my kids are actually EATING the veggies we've grown, I'm all for giving it a shot!

I've done some research, but not sure of the best way to go. I guess a cold frame would last the longest and give me the best heat, but I'm concerned about it being 1) expensive to build, and 2) beyond my construction abilities.

A hoop house seems easy enough and could be pretty inexpensive, but sounds like they don't last and don't raise the temp too much. Can anybody elaborate on that for me that has experience with them?

Incidentally, I have two 4 X 4 garden beds with a one foot walkway in between them. So either I have to build two 4 X 4 somethings, or one 4 X 9 something.

What about using this suntuf stuff for a cold frame roof? Could be cut to my dimensions & would be a lot lighter than an old storm window?
