Name That Plant!

Can someone ID this shrub

I saw this at a yard sale Sat. It is clearly a barky shrub, but had masses of daisy like lavender flowers on it. The owner didn't have a clue, only that it bordered her patio, was just greenery until Sept. when it started blossoming thru Nov., then back to green til the next year. She said some relatives had came and dug up big bunches and reset and is doing great. I broke off a sprig to see if I could start it at home. It is an Aster.

Specifically, it's New England Aster, a native wildflower. Will grow just about anywhere from in field to nearly plain gravel. (I'd still root it in real soil.)

I have a big one of these too. Bees just love it in the late season.

Bev, could you post a larger picture that shows more detail? Does the shrub drop its foliage in the fall? One possibility is Ilex verticillata, Winterberry Holly, a native, wetland holly that loses it leaves each autumn. Check out the pix at the link below. The plants should grow rather easily from seed. Just collect seed pods that are beginning to break open. In AZ there are 30 native species! Lantana montevidensis (syn. L. Sellowiana) , trailing Lantana. My advice is that you call your local extension office to find out about this plant's status as invasive in your county. Birds can spread the seeds like crazy.....they are about the only thing for whom the plant isn't toxic.

Leaves seem too small for New England Aster. Don't know what species it is though.

Whichever aster it turns out to be (we call them Michaelmas daisies due to their flowerining time) it is not a shrub. It's a perennial. You will not be able to start it from a stem cutting. You'll need to get a division with roots attached.

While I agree it's faster and easier to grow Aster from divisions
I've grown them from cuttings. No one told me or my plants that
wouldn't work ;-)

OK Tamarisk. I should really know better than to make categorical statements on these forums. I'd never seen or heard reference to aster cuttings but it seems that they do work. I Googled and interestingly there are very few refs to UK sources for this method of propagation. We just divide the clumps up. I still think the bits in the photos don't look very promisimg cutting material but there's no harm in having a go.

I grow a lot of Asters, in the spring I take cuttings from the new growth and root them in a cloning machine, lots of roots in just 7 to 10 days. Another good way is to take root cuttings, just pot these up.
