Rose Campion - Potting up for plant sale or trading - need tips

I've transplanted Rose Campion before in my OWN yard and it does ok usually but sulks for awhile. Now I'm wondering how well it would do if I potted some up for a plant sale or mailed it bare root. Any experience with either? I let mine go to seed one year and now have gobs of two (possibly three) year old plants that haven't bloomed yet but will this year I think. It's a great plant after you know to dead head it. lol Hate to waste them.

Christie, wish I knew you had extras......I wouldn't have planted the seeds. I can't advise you about the seedlings, but I would think you could just pot them in regular 4 or 6 paks and they would do well. I am not sure about the bare root thing. I have bought dormant perennials in bags of damp moss before though.

Gld - You know you need more. : ) I thought I might donate some to the Master Gardener sale but you can have some too. There's plenty. I just don't know if I'll find time to pot them all up to donate. I'm STILL trying to recover from the ice storm. What a job! Had to dig a bunch of stuff before we could clean out the four trees that were uprooted in my not-as-shady-as-it-used-to-be shade garden. I've been trying to replant it all and figuring out where hasn't been easy.

I'm hoping the rose campion will fit into four inch pots but I'm afraid they may be too big for that. I need to dig a few and find out.

esh - the other leaves are False Indigo. About the Baptisia, do think I could propagate it? I've never tried, but I could. Acording to Dave's, "Propagation Methods: From seed; direct sow outdoors in fall From seed; winter sow in vented containers, coldframe or unheated greenhouse From seed; stratify if sowing indoors From seed; germinate in a damp paper towel Scarify seed before sowing" But I don't recall seeing seed pods.... I guess I need to pay closer attention. In the meantime, I could put a stem in water and see what happens.

I actually prefer growing them in containers. When I first started growing roses, I lived in an apartment and didn't want to plant them in the ground, seeing as how I only rented the place and didn't want to leave them if I ever moved. Later on, I did decide to try planting some in the ground, and only one survived. It does seem better to start them off in their own pots first, letting them become somewhat established with more of a root structure. It would give them a much better start at growing bigger and stronger, better able to handle being planted in the ground later on, should you decide to do so. My neighbor loved my roses and he would always come by and buy some from me for his wife. There is one drawback to growing them in containers. Theft. I had this absolutely gorgeous rose called "Royal William." It had deep red, fragrant roses, that was my favorite. I came home one day and someone had come by and stole the plant right off of my porch. I've been wanting another one of that variety ever since. But where I live now is a much better and more secluded neighborhood. I joke around with my friends about how I could leave all my doors wide open and leave for the day, and no one would bother my stuff, lol. I love my neighbors, and they all love my garden.

What does everyone use to raise potted roses up off ground?

These are what I made to keep my potted plants on. I made them from a 2"x6" piece of cedar. They cost about $1.50 a stand. They go together very fast. They aren't on rollers but I have a dolly that sits about 4" off the ground and is 18" x 24"so if I need to move one it is relatively easy to set them on the dolly.

Here are some pic update from my J&P sale and Wayside Gardens sale. Wayside Gardens sale roses (The Ancient Mariner x2 , Princess Alexandra Of Kent x2 , Darcey Bussell, Tess of the d'Urbervilles) were stressed from shipping in high temperature then got hit by the sun in my garden even they were under a tree, all the new growths died and it took a while with a lot of extra care before some new growths showed up again. Here are the pics of the 2 with slowest growths (The Ancient Mariner and Princess Alexandra Of Kent) taking today. I wasn't sure that these 2 could make it. I'm glad they did. I've dug and potted them many times - it's a great way to get rid of quart-sized pots. If you try to squeeze them into small pots, just be sure to keep them shaded afterwards, because you'll have disturbed the roots pretty seriously.
If you have to use small pots, don't worry, these are pretty tough beasts.

Have not tried mailing them bare-root, interesting idea though!
