Trying To Grow Roses From Seed

The snow is finally melting here in Eastern Ontario and I've begun my early spring chores. Potted roses are outside as of yesterday, have been pruned and are breaking bud.

For the first time ever, I have planted a flat of rose seeds, collected from hips on my own plants. I found and followed the instructions on how to germinate seed on the Santa Clarita Rose Society Web Page and just finished planting 110 seeds from six different mother plants. The varieties I took seed from are as follows:

Vick's Caprice, Hybrid Perpetual - 2 seeds
Saint Swithun, Modern Reproduction, Austin - 27 seeds
Lilian Austin, Modern Reproduction, Austin - 15 seeds
Abraham Darby, Modern Reproduction, Austin - 7 seeds
Prairie Harvest, Buck - 25 seeds
Folksinger, Buck - 20 seeds
Joyce Barden, Modern Reproduction, Barden - 14 seeds

Now the long wait for the seed to germinate begins. I know not all of the seed will germinate. Once I have baby plants, I will have to grow them on for two or three years to evaluate. Even if half germinate, I will be very lucky to end up with even one plant worth growing at the end. But the excitement of trying this new, for me, facet of rose growing is intoxicating. Wish me luck.

Cheers, Rick
