Questions about Coffee Grounds and Spraying for Black Spot

I have a bunch of possibly stupid questions.

How do you all spread your coffee grounds? Do you just sprnikle them on top of the mulch? Move the mulch a bit and put them right on top of the soil? Scratch the grounds into the surface of the soil? What about the coffee filters? Will those decompose? Also, do you all let the brewed grounds dry out a bit first or scatter them wet? I am so confused.

How does everyone spray their tall clibmers? Do you get up on a ladder every time you spray to get the top of the bush? Use tall husbands? I am using Bayer Advanced Disease and since it's systemic, do I even need to worry about the climbers above about 5.5'? Aren't the top of the bushes less prone to black spot since it is a soil born disease?

coffee grounds- i don't think i would scratch into soil. wet or dry but not hot, filters will eventually decompose.

since you are using a systemic, i wouldn't spray, and yes it seems that leaves closer to the soil and wetter seem to bs the worst.

None of the common rose fungicides is truly systemic. A true systemic is transported both upward in the xylem and downward in the phloem. The tebuconazole fungicide in your Bayer Advanced product is upwardly systemic in the xylem only. It cannot travel backward and downward from the leaves on a sprayed stem which means it can't then move upward to a higher stem and enter its leaves. What it amounts to is, if you don't spray a leaf, that leaf isn't protected. The safest and the most effective way to spray a climber is probably with a ladder. Standing below falling spray isn't a good idea.

rosepep, you should try some teas, not hybrid teas, but old fashioned teas. There are several threads on them in the antique rose forum. They are more garden roses than hybrid teas, but they are beautiful, can get large, require less pruning, and so far do not blackspot in my yard. I have 3 and ordered 12 more this winter. One mistake I made was not removing all my old leaves. That's where the bs probably stayed. Those leaves were affected first, then it spread to some new foliage. I thought by doing the lime sulphur, it would get rid of the old leaves, but I didn't use a strong enough solution. Before I sprayed yesterday, I tried to get rid of all the old leaves that were left, they look funny now that the new leaves are growing it. The roses that didn't have old leaves left were the least affected by bs, so that must be it. Another year, another lesson learned.

So many fellow coffee ground people on this site its a great Xmas present! Good advice with adding to wood chips, lawn clippins, or leaves, and keeping the whole stack moist is a good tip also. I've found that when they are used in isolation it can cause problems with crusting and preventing air and water flow to the lower levels, so always have some additional materials ready to add. When adding to the worm farm, the best results seem to come from letting the bag of UCG ferment for a week or two and then add them in with lawn clippings or kitchen scraps, again never on its own. Hey Karen, Usually u keep spraying till there are no signs of BT. Usully if the leaves have Black Spots I cut them all off and keep spraying, again spray earlier in the day. The BT will shrivel and dry up, at a certain point the BT parts will dry up and fall off on their own, like an old inflo falls off. Again I would keep spraying till there is no signs of black tip, remember in So Cal this is black tip season. I got BT on my Donald Angus Red and its still going on... Good Luck

something really strange is happening with houzz. I keep getting error messages, the “web page was reloaded because a problem occurred “ then it totally flips out. I posted a msg and photos and it all disappeared. anyway, what I said was I’m glad it sounds unlike downy mildew. It must be either black spot or a soil and root problem. But I’m hopeful because the problem leaves are much fewer in number. These are all I found today Do they look like blackspot? the canes still have spots but there are new shoots and buds. The leaves still look smaller than normal. I’ll keep spraying with fungicide and see what happens when the buds open. this is how the Rose looks now It’s improving but still nothing like it used to be

The used grounds go right around the base of the rose; I leave a little bare soil there for the coffee grounds! I like them to start breaking down right away. The eggshells, banana peels, citrus rinds & such I bury with a small trowel & cover back up with mulch. I tuck used filters under the mulch around newly planted annuals like Wave petunias as little weed control barriers! I love recycling, I also use balls of hair from my Golden Retriever to keep slugs off tender plants--again, just tuck it around the plant & under the mulch.
