Rake up or leave these leaves for compost?

I just moved to a new place that's surrounded by trees - totally different than what I'm used to. There's a fenced-in side garden that has some ferns and a few other things, but it's buried in about 1 1/2 feet of wet leaves and has been for months. At first I was planning on raking the area clear so that anything planted there (and I don't know what that might be) could get some sun, but it occurred to me that leaving the leaves on until March could create some great compost. Any thoughts?
