mulching, materials and removal method

Digger Dave's post about Color Magic got me thinking about winter protection again. Most of mine in the ground get no attention other than the last leaves that don't get raked up. The potted ones are in an experimental deep ditch with leaves on top this winter.

I have so many leaves from the oaks around the edge of the woods, and so much hemlock scrub that can be cut into leaf-anchoring cover, that I've never thought about mulching materials. But Digger Dave mentioned "coarse sand". What is that? Superior to oak leaves? I haven't seen any bags of it at Agway. I do see playground sand, in plastic tubes.

And, what about taking mulch off the roses that are in the ground? I expect that when I lift the pots up from their winter trench retreat, most of the leaves will fall off, and the rest will be easy enough to tease out with a hand cultivator/three prong thingy. But how do you get mulch away from a large nasty thorny shrub without damage either to self or canes?
