I would need to see some pictures to even venture a guess as to what your rose is but there were 3 roses (available in the USA) that came up when I did a search on Help Me Find that are supposed to have a raspberry fragrance, Veterans' Honor, Love's Promise and Firefighter. All three are a dark red with HT style blooms.

Yes, photos would be very helpful! Could be Oklahoma, Chrysler Imperial or Crimson Glory as well - all have "similar" scents - I find Chrysler Imperial and Crimson Glory to be the most intoxicating.

Veteran's Honor in my yard has very strong raspberry frgrance. Oklahoma, Mr Lincoln, Chrysler Imperial or Crimson Glory are all wonderfully fragrant, but their fragrancies are very different.
It always surprises me that VH is often described as not fragrant or slightly fragrant. My VH is planted next to my deck door and it perfumes the whole deck. Everybody comment on its fragrance, so it is not just me.

Among the three roses Seil listed (Veterans' Honor, Love's Promise and Firefighter), the most fragrant one is Firefighter. I vote for this wonderful and vigorous rose.

But the same 9/11 rose, orange colored "We Salute You" has even stronger fruity smell, though I am not sure it is raspberry. We planted side by side. Both of them have distinct strong fruity smells. But always "We Salute You" wins for me. Other people say they like "Firefighter" better.

Hi RWS: Since I'm in a cold zone like your zone 4, I always look for hardy and TALL red HT's. Mr. Lincoln is NOT hardy in zone 5a. This is our mildest winter in over a decade, but other winters the rosarian Karl Bapst, zone 5a grew it twice and Mr. Lincoln died on him. The rose park, Zone 5a, got rid of Mr. Lincoln and planted Chrysler Imperial, but this rose doesn't have much of scent in cold weather (it's very short). Chrysler Imperial is under 3' at the rose park, I had to crawl to sniff it in late fall (it didn't smell that good).

Firefighter is tall, 4' to 5', that's why I'm getting it but it requires winter protection. The hardy ones that are reported WITHOUT winter-protection in zone 5a/4 remain Mirandy and Crimson Glory. Mirandy is dark red velvelty soft as you described, and is 4' to 3' tall. Mirandy is reported as fruity, and as good as Jude the Obscure by one account. Crimson glory is damask and rosy scent. I'm getting Crimson glory this spring because my kid doesn't like dark red.

Crimson glory's thorns are not bad, but Mirandy's thorns are closer. There's a picture in Help Me Find website that show Mirandy's thorns. If it match with yours, then there's a good chance it's Mirandy, known for the best hardiness in zone 4 and 5a.

Alec's Red is also on my rose order, since it's hardier than Veterans' Honor. Both Alec's Red and Veterans' Honor are BRIGHT RED, and they are not deep dark velvelty red as you described. Someone in my zone reported growing Mirandy without winter protection for over a decade.

Gosh, thanks so much for all the ideas. I had been looking at Veteran's Honor and Chrysler Imperial, but couldn't make an informed guess.

My two Mr. Lincoln's did fine this warm winter, so I'll get to enjoy them for another summer at least. I threw some straw over them for winter protection, and thats it. I want their spots to be filled with "My Rose!" tho. They're getting moved this spring.

I'll lay wagers that what you have is Mirandy. I've grown mine unprotected in zone 4 for 20 years; the fruity scent is one of my very favorites. Order one - you can't go wrong anyway - and you may find it's your match. Either way, I'm sure you'll love it. :-)

This rose sounds like Let Freedom Ring.

VH smells raspberry, but the fragrance is never very strong. 'Mirandy' sounds more likely.

I found this thread because I am *still* trying to figure out what was the red velvety raspberry-scented rose I used to sniff in a neighbor's yard in my early teens. So anything more recent than about 1972 is not a candidate, but Mirandy sounds like a candidate. I have sniffed a lot of reds since to no avail, and am so happy to have found some suggestions for what I ought to try to find to sniff now. If you get some cuttings to take, runswithscissors, perhaps you can share??? : )

We have the same rose. Alas, I don't know it's name either. When I read your post I was hoping to get a name. That raspberry smell is wonderful though!

Let Freedom Ring is a tall red hybrid tea with an amazing fragrance. It is like raspberry tea, differing slightly from Firefighter which is just straight sun-ripened raspberries. I think that LFR has just a hint more 'blueing' to the red than FF.
