Japanese Holly is bare in the middle

Hi!

We have some Japanese Holly that are about 4 years old and have never been pruned, however instead of being shrub like, they are almost bowl like with bare wood in the middle. The severe snowfall this Winter probably didn't help, but they were certainly like this last year as well.

They are growing well with new growth and flowers, however I'm wondering if I can prune the branches in the middle to get them to start sprouting new growth to fill in and grow upwards. I'm afraid I'm going to make them more bowl like if I do. If so, can I prune them now? I'm finding lots of conflicting information on the web and was wondering if anyone can speak from experience.

Thanks so much!
