how long can you leave BR's soaking?

I have some that I've procrastinated in getting planted and then we now have cold spell for the next 2 days...so they are still in water!! I've been changing the water, but still not sure how long is reasonable, how long is too long etc.

We once left some soaking for a couple of weeks, but I have heard of people who left them for a couple of MONTHS -- with no problem.

I was one of these "bad" people. Due to some family issues I had to leave my bareroots on my deck soaking from late November when I got them from Pickering till early March, when finally ground was workable to plant them. They went through multiple cycles of freeze/thaw, because we usually are below freezing at night and above freezing during the day. All 5 different varieries survived and are happy growing in my garden for more then 5 years now after this abuse.
This was an emergency, in normal situation I don't feel bad if I soak them for 2-3 weeks.

Hey both of you, many thanks! Will comply! The bean seeds have started germinating - Woo! Thanks Marda! You were bang on, all it needed was more bloody patience! I stopped drowning them in water and left them on my window-sill (which is shaded), on-top of a wet cotton wad. I also googled this: "http://www.pssc.ttu.edu/plantprop/contain.htm". It explains a lot off stuff (Oxygen apparently is required during germination ). meldy_nva: Does the tea soaking trick work only with bean and pea (legumes), or will it work with all seeds. Any idea how and why it works? I'll definitely try it out since both my Mum and Dad are big time tea drinkers :) Oh, i live in Bangalore, India. It's mostly cold and cloudy with rain from time to time. But it's quite sunny as well. Very temperate climate 16-32 Centi. My soil is very clayey and it's been a right royal pain digging in it! I have been planting my sprouted seeds in well dug up soil ('bout a inch in depth), but i notice that the top hardens in the sun (because of the clay) and i worry that the sprouts may not be able to break through. I think i shall try transplanting them as you suggested - saves on excess watering as well!

For the very short period of time that you indicate the new roses will be in water, soak as much of the plant as you possibly can. If possible, submerge the entire plant. If things don't work out as planned, and if (like me, sometimes) you end up soaking those bareroots for WEEKS, then perhaps you might consider soaking just the lower portion -- which might (or might not) include the bud unions and a portion of the canes, in addition to the roots. The most important thing to keep in mind is the roots. At a minumum, keep the roots soaking until you can get your roses planted.

You can certain soak them from Friday till Monday. Be sure and not cover the crown, just the roots. The daylilies will love having the water. You could change the water at least once to be on the safe side as its so hot and who knows what nasty bacteria grow in this hot weather.

Depends on what it's taped to. You could probably leave it on another painted surface for years. I've had it peel finish off a table within hours. If you visit some floor refinish sites, you'll see all kinds of damage to concrete and stone from tape.

I've heard about these long soaks, but didn't have very good results last year when the weather refused to cooperate with my free days for planting. As a result, 6 of my new bareroots ended up soaking 2-3 weeks. When I finally got them all planted, the first batch (which soaked the shortest time period) grew fine. The second batch (which soaked 2+ weeks) grew weakly for about 6 weeks and then began giving up the ghost--all dead by the time the really hot weather got here.

I don't know how typical that is. I just know I'm replacing the 3 lost ones this spring--and hopefully they won't have to soak more than a few days.

Soaking if the water is cold should be fine. I think the problem begins when the weather starts to warm up and the bacteria in the water then start to multiply. My experience anyway.

thanks for all the comments. I feel better now, and yes, since it's been colder here the water is also cooler/cold. I'm expecting to plant them this week we will start warming some after wednesday.

I've been naughty too and left them for 4-6 weeks.
If it's gonna' get real cold move the bucket of water under cover and you should be fine.
