Are these hurt by frost or bit by insect?

where are you

when did it happen ...

is it a recent transplant?? .. how have you been watering it.. if so???

i doubt its an insect ...

did it show after the lawn was sprayed???

did you have the heat wave we had last week ... it may have had a growth sprut at the moment of transplant ... cut back on water... insert finger in soil to 3 to 6 inches.. and do NOT water it again until the soil starts to dry .... this early in spring.. it does not need that much water ... i think you are expecting miracles ..... a few days is too fast to expect anything .... you are probably right about shock .... all you can do is wait and see ... i do NOT recommend digging it up again ... good luck ken

You're welcome. Hope things perk up! Most garden-related stuff is dependent on your climate. Climates are divided into gardening zones. You can find your zone here, which is probably zone 8. There are TONS of beautiful specimens of euonymus elatus compacta all over the Twin Cities and Wisconsin. I do occasionally see some that suffer some die-back (my new ones, included) or that get chewed on by the rabbits, but there are even more that look just beautiful. To me, this is a plant that's well worth having. I have a mature one by my front window and I so enjoy the birds that come to visit on it to pick who-knows-what from the bark even in the middle of the winter. I only wish the branches were strong enough for a feeder! Now that I know the rabbits like to chew on them, I will put some Fence-off, or what ever that's called, on them occasionally.

Euonymus alata will need a lot of pruning. When we moved into this house, there were 3 on the N side. Under those 3 were thousands of tiny Euonymus alata. It gets berries on it. I shudder to think how many of our neighbors, far and wide, have because of those plants on the side of our house! We've gotten 3 Morus alba (white mulberry) trees so far and we've only lived in this house for 6 yrs!! I also pulled up a small Berberis thunbergii (Japanese barberry) from the S side of our house. I know neighbors up the street, to our N, have them. Birds again. We're also dealing with indian strawberries, I don't know the Latin name. I'm sure again, compliments of the birds. Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica) would be a better choice than the Euonymus alata. 'Henry's Garnet' is a cultivar with reddish purple fall color. It's size is listed at 3' tall by 4' wide. Or any of the smaller viburnums would work too! :D

its a deciduous plant.. it lost its leaves for winter..

i dont understand.. how you way it happened last fall ... and came back this spring ...

it recurred on new leaves ...???

It is a new developed area, They are planted two years ago. It grew well and had beautiful leaves in the first year.

An automated sprinkler system? How long is it on for?

Given that information, I'd guess the issue was lack of water. Euonymus alatus often responds to dry soil conditions with a browning or drying of the foliage. Typically, automated watering systems are not set or programmed for the best growth of the plants they are tending. Coming on daily or even twice a day for a few minutes at a time simply does not deliver the volume of water most plants need nor deeply enough to be effective. It will always be better to water less often but for a longer period of time so that the water penetrates deeply down to at least the base of the rootball. Depending on the situation, that might be once or twice a week for 20-30 minutes.

Personally, I think most automated watering systems are a huge waste of money and natural resources for anything other than lawns. They do not deliver the water efficiently, they are rarely programmed properly and they waste huge amounts of water to evaporation and/or run-off. Using a low emission system like a drip or soaker hose is a much better choice.
