Name That Plant!

Same weed/flower, different colors

The green wildflower/weed is growing all over the woods, gets about 3 ft tall, just starting to bloom. The reddish brown one is a shrub in our yard, it was called "chocolate" something, both have the little fuzzy blooms, leaves are exactly the same, just color is different. Do you know what they are?? thanks!

Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate'

The one in the woods is plain old Eupatorium rugosum, White Snakeroot. A very common late summer wildflower. The reddish brown one is probably Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate' like Chris says. A garden cultivar. I've got it and it's a positive weed, it seeds around so much.

The wild one makes cows milk poisonous if they eat it. Supposedly it's what killed Abraham Lincoln's mother. And there are a bunch of other Eupatoriums with similar flowers but different leaves, but E. rugosum is by far the most common around here. (NJ)

Oh, and it looks like 'they' are changing the Latin name to Ageratina altissima. Bah.

They do tend to self seed, so you may or may not want to remove the dead flowers before they develop seed heads.

Thanks for the explanation Dar, I have never paid too much attention to flower color before as I usually only grew two different varieties most years, three one year and these were all well separated. This year I'm growing Insuk Wang Kong in the same location as my Italians but they're not supposed to cross, Uncle Steve's are pretty much isolated, as were the rice beans. All the others are growing together in the patch these I've bagged flowers as they were forming on the ones I need to save a few seeds from. Annette

Well, young grass is not going to be as dark as mature grass. But even when it matures, chances are high they will not blend. There's huge variance in genetic color among fescue cultivars, ranging from lime yellow to very dark blue/green. You have to use the same cultivar. Can't tell what the weed is in the last picture, it's not clear enough. You'd need a picture from like 3" away.

I have often wondered what ken’s background is, because he knows about all things plant (hosta, perennials, trees,.....) He was married at one point, I assume, because he talks about “the kids and having a house.” I have always imagined he is a retired professor of horticulture, botany, and dendrology (study of trees).
