I got some of those crisps for the aquarium fish, and they didn't like them, so I gave them to the koi in the pond. They liked them. Like you, I have some babies that were reluctant to come to the top and get knocked about by the bigger fish, so these sinking crisps worked really well.

Nothing went to waste, however. I have a bare liner bottom and after they've cleaned up everything at the surface, the big guys browse along the bottom for anything that has sunk.

Get some Fall/Spring food. It is designed to be easy for the fish to digest when the water temp dips. Below 50F I wouldn't feed them anymore. If they are really hungry they will eat alge/plant matter if you have lillys or something in the water.

Hey, GB1.I have been feeding the Fall/Spring food along with the crispies and to tell the truth, the little guys can't eat it because even when it is soaked it is too big for them to do any more than nibble. Then it pops back up to the surface where it is grabbed by one of the big guys. I have even broken the sticks into quarters and the big guys still get the lion's share. Some of the crispies sink into the foliage where the little guys can get to it without dealing with a fish that is hundreds of times their size. Even without that, the Fall/Spring stuff is hard to come by here. Sandy

Why not crush some in your hand when you toss it in? That might help.

LOL! I wonder how many times I have mentioned Fibromyalgia, Carpal Tunnel surgery, muscle spasms, etc. etc.. I have trouble crushing the sides of a child proof lid, let alone those hard bits. A hammer might do the job but it doesn't sink and the babies don't get any because it winds up in the skimmer or rotting among the stems where it collects because it doesn't break the surface tension.
Nancy is right about the way the big guys become vacuum cleaners sucking up what ends up on the bottom. Sometimes a red crisp is missed, (I don't know why) but the big guys use their tails to make waves that wash the trapped crisps back where they can be eaten or they climb into the pots and guzzle down the crisps until they are gone. If they miss anything, the guppies are gathered in there at feeding time anyhow. It's funny to watch the acrobatics of the big guys getting over the rim of a pot. I used to have a koi that would climb onto floating lily pads to get to what landed on the pads.
Does anyone know why the red crisps are passed by until everything else is gone? It is the last thing eaten in the aquariums, too. Sandy

No idea on the red crisps. I keep some frozen shimp as occasional treats for my koi in the summer (the kind you find frozen in pet stores, bigger than the brine shrimp but not as big as restaurant shimp). Most of the koi love them, but there are a few that apparently don't like the taste. They try them and then spit them out. Maybe they just don't like the taste of those red crisps.
