'native Wildflower' or 'weed' with poinsettia shaped leaves

This small plant comes up in August and has poinsettia- (or fiddle-) shaped green leaves with small red dots at the stem end of the leaf. As it matures, a round (seed?) ball forms near the red spot and bears very tiny- almost microscopic - white flowers, which attract bees. The plant lasts about 6-8 weeks. I've lived in this house for a year and was glad to see these come up again, as I had replanted their bed this spring. No one here can tell me what it is and I have exhausted my resources. I suspect it is a native wildflower, but one of the previous owners was a florist and I have found several "exotic" plants which I think she started 50 years ago!
