Could this be black walnut tree?

The fruit is pretty big, like a tennis ball. Found this on my walk through the trail. Not sure if it is edible. Can someone confirm? Thank you very much!!

Yes it looks like black walnut. They are edible but getting to the little bit of meat inside can be quite messy.

lol I think I would recognize them better all OVER MY YARD!! I hate those things (though, I love walnuts). They drop on the house...on my garden (and grow next spring to summer)...on my car....yeah. I do think it is, though. And yes, they are VERY difficult and messy to crack. I would rather just buy some. lol Where there any of these on the ground of the trail, too? They are starting to drop steadily here.

Some trees will grow next to walnuts - see link below. I planted a few acres of walnut seedlings in one area of my reforestation project and used the list to determine which trees I could mix with the walnuts. I planted a lot of oaks, redbuds, and red cedars mixed in with the walnuts to add some variety, but several others will do fine next to them as well. Another option would be to remove the walnut tres and replant the spruces. I've read the juglone lasts 2-5 yrs in the roots/soil after the tree is killed so the new trees may get off to a slow start until the juglone totally fades away. john Here is a link that might be useful: Walnut Trees

These don't appreciate shade and would be liable to appear even more gloomy and scruffy stuck beneath another tree than they do anyway. Then there is the matter of the visual tension produced by having a conical conifer stabbing up through a deciduous tree (unless the shade is heavy enough to prevent it from growing up through the branches of the walnut much). If you don't require tall plants use broadleaved evergreen shrubs with rounded or spreading growth habits instead of coniferous evergreens. If you require tall plants that will be likely to grow well above the bottom level of walnut branches it would be greatly preferable to have these located behind or beyond the spread of the tree branches.

We read that black walnut trees kill these. ....yes and many other plants too. Black walnut tree are messy, not very attractive and there are many other ornamental trees and shrubs that will not grow in their root zone. Getting rid of one troublesome plant with another troublesome plant may not be the best choice. You dont find any black walnuts for sale in nurseries because they are not a great plant to grow in your yard and it will take years to yield their impact on the grapes.. Try cutting the grape vines. Maybe do a little at a time. I am not a fan of Round up - but it may be a better choice. Mike Here is a link that might be useful: ohio help

Why do you need a walnut tree for baking, just go to a good store and buy them! I feel the same as Connie M. I'm so sick of my neighbor's walnut tree. I'm surprised no one mentioned the fact that they attract rats 🐀!!! They either live in the trees or envade your yard to eat the fallen nuts. When it rains, the tree leaves secret oils that heavily stain concrete and leaves a black soot on surrounding plants. In addition, A LOT of people are seriously allergic to nuts (including me). When they are not dropping THOUSANDS of leaves or nuts, they drop these wormy-looking things all over the yard. When the leaves come out for spring, allergies 🤧 are ridiculous. They are aggressive in height and grow branches that touch the ground; basically takes over the yard...and everyone's yard it's next too. Expensive to have it trimmed ($300 for just my side) neighbor only trims the part that touces his patio and leaves the rest for his other three neighbors to deal with. I had to pay $220 to have my concrete powerwashed! And yes, i have asked the neighbors 5 times to trim the tree but no resolve. The tree is a nuisance! It provides shade, but I'd rather install a Pergola than to deal with the overload of cons!!!

Yes, there are some already on the ground of the trail. Majority are still up on the tree. I've heard of black walnut but never knew I would find one close by. Definitely worth buying the meat then spending the time to crack it open. Thank you for identifying the mystery nut!!

If you can buy the meat, you are lucky! My folks' property was loaded with them, and we kept trying with little success. If you collect any nuts, the husks produce a strong dye: so don't carry any in your pockets!

OMG...............we have and harvest them. I did the shucking one year from the hull, and the mate did the cracking and nut extraction. We have a device designed especially for them. To make a long story short, I was working with the public at the time, and wore several sets of gloves to keep the juice from staining my fingers. Ha! The dye seeped through a pair of cotton and also latex gloves. My fingers started out green and turned brown and it looked like the hands of an old geezer who smoked unfiltered cigarettes down to the nubbins. I taped all my fingers over every day for a couple weeks out of embarrassment. Nothing, including hand scrubs with scouring powder took it off.

My parents' house still has a walnut stain on the cellar floor so many decades later from when we harvested and stored the nuts there -- oops! Yes, beautiful and strong walnut-colored dye!

Nuts are an acquired taste but if you've acquired it, they are well worth the work!

Oh my! I didn't know about the stain and I cut 1 up out of curiosity. Now my finger nails and fingers on my left hand look really dirty. I think I need to do the same to my right hand to make them look even :)
