Free Duckweed Should I use it in my pond?

In my complex, we have a sizeable pond with an areator and duckweed has taken over the pond. Our association will be looking into either purchasing carp or natural chemicals to eliminate the duckweed in the future.

I've purchased duckweed at $8 per pound only to have my shubunkins gobble it up within 2 days. At $8 per pound, that was the end of their special treat. Has anyone scooped wild duckweed from natural ponds for your home pond? Will this open the door to parasites? Is there a way to treat the wild duckweed before introducing to my small pond? My shubunkins love this stuff and it's just around the corner for free. Thanks much.
