Not ordering any roses this year

As some of you already know, I cut way back on my roses over the past two years, by nearly a third. Last year I put in my Hobbit Garden (herbs and old-fashioned flowers) and we expanded the vegetable garden. This year we are planting a small home orchard, eighteen trees and some blueberries added to the eight fruit trees already there. While my love of roses remains undimmed, I have as many as I can take care of, so I'm not buying more roses.

Except that I still read this forum regularly, and was very intrigued by the recent discussion of Madame de SÃ©vignÃ©. Definitely sounded like my kind of rose, fragrant and full and romantic. So this morning I had to call Trish at Ashdown and ask her to send it to me. And earlier this year I contacted Gita at Vintage and expressed a desire for Gertrude Jeckyll, Great Maiden's Blush, Bardou Job, and Madame Legras de St. Germain. Hey, if you're on first name terms with the people you order your roses from, it's hardly a real business transaction somehow.

So you can see, I didn't order any roses this year.

You make me laugh. Then I'm not ordering any roses this year either. I'm just getting replacements. Well, except for that one...

From my spring orders, the most unusual: Errinerung an Brod (rambler) Inermis Morletii (rambler) Umbra (gallica hybridized by Paul Barden) Incantation (small shrub rose, also by Barden) Geschwind's Orden (shrub) Norland Rose (climber) Break o'Day (Brownell HT) Andrewsii (spinossisima) Alika (gallica) Prairie Flower (Buck) Sweet Fragrance (Grandiflora by Ping Lim) Omphale (gallica) Daphne' (gallica) Heinrich Karsch (polyantha) And for every one of these (plus the other seven I haven't listed because I see them talked about all the time) I must find a rose already in the garden to remove, pot up and give away. No expansion, that's my self-imposed new rule and that will make planting twice the work, I think! Oh well, a good number of these will be small bands that may not go in the ground yet this year. Marleah,The only rose from your list that I grow is Archduc Joseph. I am in a different zone to you, but here, he grew fast from the start. I water him once a fortnight during the summer. Other than that, he gets nothing else at all from me except admiration. He flowers for most of the year. It is 5 degrees celsius outside at the moment, so he only has a few flowers open right now. My biggest surprise was that my potted roses grew so well this year. I never grew roses in pots before, so was rather skeptical about the whole ordeal, but they did fine. Another surprise was that after reading all the horror stories about the bourbons I was expecting them to get all sorts of diseases, but so far they are cleaner than clean in my not sprayed garden. I also was surprised my the fragrance of Alnwick castle - I got it as replacement for Heritage, which nursery run out of stock and so far it seems that is was very fair trade off. Other positive surprises came from more modern roses, Our Molly (Bright Eyes) that I got to stretch my order to 10 plants, turned out to be a very lovely rose, blooms pretty much continuously here. Another one is Euphoria, I bought it last year from the local nursery not giving much thought to it (hubby liked the flowers), almost murdered it forgetting to water (as in completely dry leaves and soil gaping away from the pot wall by an inch). It recovered and grew a lot, blooms pretty much continuously too. I also had a few not so nice surprises, MAC mildewing horribly, a few roses being a bit of a disappointment compared to the pictures, the fact that I can't detect alba fragrance it seems. Also guess who is black spot queen in my garden at the moment? New Dawn! I grew that rose for about 15 years (not same plant, but I had one in my old garden) and never saw it get so much of it. The only difference was that I actually fertilized it this year - next year she is going back on diet! :D

Most vendor encourage early orders to generate the cash flow needed to run a business--I have no issues with paying Palatine 1/2 up front months before they ship their roses. The popular varieties sell out really fast. Now is the time to buy potted plants--just before Mother's day--this gets people into the nurseries. But, you really need to do your homework, as these plants may not do well in your garden, no matter how good they look when you buy them. Perhaps that is what you should be doing over the summer--carefully studying roses to see what best meets your needs. Go to some public gardens and smell the roses! I plant my bare root roses in March, assuming that the ground has thawed. If not, they will store just fine in the garage. This gives them plenty time to grow roots.

I'm not ordering any this year either. The new ones I just received were ordered in December of 2007.

LOL Paula and Gail. I only bought one new rose this year (Alchymist). The other six are free so technically they don't count right?

Hey, ladies, I admire your character and magnificent self-restraint. Alas, I have fallen short of your fine examples. I simply am unable to think of a way to say, "I did not order 13 roses this year." And unfortunately, I really can't say any of them were FREE!

I only own 12 roses since I started this past summer so I have not so much self restraint. The poor husband still has not caught up digging holes for me so every time I have a rose I want to get he is not so thrilled as I. So far I have only purchased 2 and was given 1 so that's not nearly as bad as it could be!

I never bought any this year either, Paula. Spent my gift certificate in December. I shouldn't have even done that. I have a wedding to put on this year. My oldest is getting married AGAIN. The first time she ran away and eloped with He Who Must Not Be Named.
So she has never had a real wedding. Little Kaylah is going to be the flower girl and Jake is the ring bearer.
The dress is purchased. Lots of those fluffy satin ruffles. It's cream colored. The other color is ruby red.
Little Kaylah is dramatic in her ruby red full length dress with the rhinestones. Couldn't get out of the wedding store without it.
We are having the wedding in the front yard east of the White Rose of York and the Red Rose of Lancaster. Pat is playing his electric guitar.
I'm cooking. I have no idea how I'm cooking for 70 people but I'm laying in hot plates.
So far, I'm doing a southern barbecue. We're having barbecued turkey, baked ham, lettuce salad, potato salad, deviled eggs, jello salad, baked beans, swedish meatballs,corn on the cob, and maybe some corn bread. French rolls and butter to go with the turkey.
My baked beans are turning into Big Pot beans and may disappear altogether.I was trying to think of something else that is very little work but people like it better. Not too many are crazy about baked beans. I myself am crazy about salad bar, but other people care less for it.
I don't suppose they will notice, after they tap the keg.
Whatever, Paula, there's no roses turning up at your house that I've noticed.

Hey! We were not talking about an order! What I can recall of the conversation was an incredible invitation to come visit you. If you somehow get a rose out of that then I am so not to blame. I know Gita would say the same.

Trish my dear, I said I wasn't buying roses! We were just having a friendly chat. The fact that a rose is leaving South Carolina and making its way to California is mere coincidence. And I'm sure you're right, that Gita would say much the same about the roses that left her care and ended up two hundred miles south in my own little patch.

Carol, I'm sure you're right that I will simply love MdS. And I'm glad you did your part.

Ronda, they don't know what they're getting into, do they? It looks so innocent, a few roses...

Kaylah, it sounds like a grand and glorious wedding. What fun! You'll forget all the work and worry once the music starts, and yes, once they tap the keg. Best wishes and much happiness to your oldest.

Pamela, I have a pretty good idea how much you're expanding your rose garden this year. Didn't order any Hahahaha! Well, it's true, you didn't! Folks, this woman is amazing.

Poor Michelle, you don't know what you've got yourself into here. But that's okay; you'll have fun.

Carla, I have posted the link to the thread that triggered this impulse down below. It was in the middle of February. Sometimes I think about things for a while, you know, trying to actually resist them.

Sherry, think of them as a baker's dozen rather than thirteen. Perhaps it will help. Do any bakers still offer a baker's dozen anymore, I wonder? Speaking of Ocala, which I see in your name, my brother and his family live in Ocala. That means we're practically related. I gave him and his wife an Old Blush rose, which they quite like.

Jackie, I like the way your mind works. I particularly like the fact that you managed to get six free roses. Quite an accomplishment!

Hoov, you handle numbers the way I do. This is probably not a good thing, but you are in company.

Buford, absolutely right. When New Year's rolls around you start all over with a clean slate.

Gardenatlanta, Replacements, yes, replacements. You can replace grass, weeds, annuals... there is no end to the replacing you can do. Why, you might never have to "buy" another rose again! BTW, I have family in your neck of the woods, too.

Duchesse, you are right, and I hope they will all be very happy here. If they are happy, I'm happy.
