Dr. Bryan Young of the Southern Illinois University conducted research in no-till soybean and corn 2 . Applications of paraquat (Gramoxone Max) at 0.75 lb ai/A, glyphosate (Roundupî, etc) at 0.77 lb ai/A, and 2,4-D were applied mid-April in 2002 and then again in 2003 to 6 to 8 inch plants. Visual ratings were taken and bulbs were collected to investigate bulb biomass reduction. Paraquat provided 70 to 78% control at one year after the 2002 application. Plots which had received glyphosate or 2,4-D applications had less than 29% control one year after spring application. When compared to the non-treated plot (6,248 bulbs per 10.8 foot squared) the paraquat treated plots had 88% less bulb density. The use of 2,4-D resulted in an increase of bulbs. Growth regulators do not appear to be effective in controlling star-of-Bethlehem. So,at this point in the season, use of paraquat would be the recommended practice for control of this weed. Though Round-up is my friend for thugs other than Star of Beth, I draw the line at the use of paraquat, which requires a special license to purchase and use. More like 'eternal' than 'perennial' when they're happy. They spread by seed or sharply-pointed runners which will easily go through the bulbs of other more-preferred species. And their older bulbs can go down 12" or more, like a string of beads. Do brilliantly in a sandy/silty soil. Don't mind shade but you'll get more leaves than flowers. Calistoga is not kidding. They're delightful - in someone else's garden.

Josh, I've been looking at lots of pictures trying to figure out if this is "Donau." I also bought a Lowes "Susan" because I was smitten by the pictures posted by "Donau" owners here. I think several of the "Donau" pictures I've seen look just like my "not-Desire," but the descriptions of the color don't match what I have. I've seen "Donau" described as "cerise," "raspberry," "lavender hues," and "smokey pink magenta." Perhaps it's a difference in word usage. To me, these terms all suggest a cool toned, blue-pink flower, like the image cindeea captured. My hippi is now a richer, darker shade than when it first opened, but still a warm toned, radiant coral rose. No cool tones. Maybe it (she?) is not done changing color. I have grown a pulmonaria which has flower buds that open pink but mature to blue. Do some hippeastrums do that? Zone 6 is definitely fine for Dahlias. IÂm zone 5A and they grow great up here. You can even start them now and they should be blooming by the middle of June. This link: http://www.scdahlias.org/howto/digdivide.html offers great advice on many things to do with Dahlias, including how to store them. After I divided my tubers, I wrapped them in cellophane and put them into a cloth grocery bag then covered the top of the bag with newspaper. I then put the bag into a fridge as I donÂt have any cold storage area. You canÂt simply leave them inside your apartment as that would be too warm for them to winter. You might get away with putting them in a cooler on the balcony over the winter if the cooler is made well enough. Enjoy! Cheers, Russ
