A question about fish food for Koi and goldfish

Hi everyone,

Now that summer is behind us and approaching the autumn season, shall I change the type of food for my fish? I have been using the Tetra brand of sticks and they do like it. However, depending upon the pet store they sometimes carry a more extensive variety of food, any suggestions for me? Thank you. Vicki

Vicki- there is a 'spring and fall' food that you can get; the packages that we have here suggest feeding the koi that food for water temps between 42 and 70. It can be digested a lot more quickly than the summer food.

Conventional wisdom says to not feed them when the water temp falls below 50, though; I feed mine with the S&F food when the water temp is below 70, and stop feeding altogether when the water temp gets below 50.

Vicki, I just bought fall and spring food for my koi and goldfish as well. The fall/spring food is for temps from 55 or so to 65 or so, and the difference is the protein content. The fall food should have much less protein and much more carbs. My fall food has 11 % protein, while the summer food had 36 %.
I don't think it matters so much what brand it is, just check for the temperature and protein. It's on the back in the small print.

Large bullfrogs are a tadpole for 2 years. If things ate them ther would be no frogs on earth. The way they have protection is their Tails. If I put 3 five gal buckets of bulfrog tadpoles in a take on my fish truck an a fish gets in there the fish will be dead in a few mins. This is because of the poison in the tadpoles tails getting into the water. So no fish will eat tadpoles. Now I have seen here Hybrid bluegills eat toad tadpoles. This is because a toad is a tadpole just a few weeks and does not have the 2 years tail protection like the big frogs need. I ahv raised fish 40 years now and hate having 50,000 frog tadpoles in apond with fish then drain it and have to SORT by hand 1-2-3-4-50,000 tadpoles from the fish. Bar graders do not work if the fish are the same size, you have be careful not to mix then in a small tank and kill fish. My fish farm is for sale now and hope i do not have sort tadpoles soon :( rest my life :( Type LIVE FISH OF INDIANA for photos --i dont think i still haev tadpole pictures there ?

We feed everyday. You can feed both the goldfish and koi the same food. (koi food) if your fish are small, mash it up a little with a mortise and postal.

just a quick newbie question about goldfish

I'm far from a Guru but I have a 2,000+ gal Koi pond. My wife loves Goldfish so we added a dozen about 10 years ago. Every year we have to give away at least 100, sometimes 200, to a friend with a 4 acre pond. I'm sure it is a treat for his game fish but we can't have that many and expect them, or the Koi, to get very large. It is a challenge to catch them a couple times a year. I guess we keep 15 to 20 of the largest (about 7"). Depends on how big you want them to grow. We never had a problem until early this Spring, when a Great Blue Heron visited the pond on a weekend we were away (was there when we returned). It took 5 of the 6 Koi ranging from 12 to 18 inches as well as all but 4 Goldfish. Those 4 Goldfish quickly reproduced at least 50 to 75 little ones. I'm going to have to buy more Koi. I used a net that I have for our grapes on the water a couple months. Haven't seen the heron but I suspect it will likely show up again.

Can you describe the symptoms? Hnladue, I worry about using the medicated food just before shut down because it reduces the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria in the fishies gut and I haven't heard any thing about parasites which I would think should be addressed as a possibility. What do you think about using some winter active bacteria? I had planned to use it any way, but for other reasons. I would agree with the salt as a general tonic. As for the amount of salt, with a pond that size could she use the salt blocks for water softening? Otherwise, it could get a little pricey. I know you were around when David mentioned it. Can you help refresh my memory? The Melafix... would it stay active in the water beyond a treatment period so that she would have to do a water change? Sorry about the questions seemingly addressed just to you. I would appreciate info from anyone who is an old timer or who is familiar with the problems. Sandy

Thanks for the information about the fish food. Today I purchased a large bag of pellets for Spring and Autumn and it does contain beneficial protein. Hopefully, my fish will like it. Vicki
