Avocado tree leaves turning black

This is my second tree that by this plague or infection has completley lost its leaves.

both are 5 months old.

i dont know how to prevent this, i have changed the soil three times, and still no improvement.

right now it has the miracle gro organic soil.

both were planted by seed, it seems that the problem is in the soil, because the plant leaves were pretty good when it was on water.

i really dont know what to do, i ran out of ideas.

Looks like it has a rot problem. Avocados must have excellent drainage. And must *never* go dry.

Avocados tend to get ragged looking when the weather is cold. They also don't like wet and cold roots. It makes them vulnerable to root rot. I wouldn't water them in the cold winter unless the soil completely drys out. I wouldn't fertilize them at all unless they are putting on a lot of new growth during the growing season. They are very sensitive to salt accumulation in the soil. My guess would be that it is suffering from the cold weather and/or salt accumulation from the information you gave.

Well, since you have several, I suggest you begin fertilizing one of them at least. Avocados are hungry plants, very vigorous, and so they can make use of nutrients. That first one may already be too far gone. Josh

the roots are stressed from the transplant .. and can not support the leaves ... water properly.. and pray ken ps: grass grew that lushly around the trunk since planting????

Today I got a much better look at the leaves. Looking at pictures on the internet I am fairly certain it is Cherry Leaf Spot. Some leaves have it very bad however almost all the leaves have it. There is only one branch that does not have it on the top where new foliage is growing. If I trim this tree everywhere I see the cherry leaf spots there would not be much left of the tree. Should I pull the leaves off that have it the worst. This tree was a replacement I picked up at wal-mart. I had planted two at the end of April that I had purchesed from Loews and they were eaten by deer. One was so badly eaten I replaced it with the wal-mart tree. It was a very nice looking tree so I bought it. Now my sewcond tree is starting to get the disease. I pulled of all the leaves I seen it on. Is there any way to keep these trees in check and will they grow fruit. I am not so much worried about getting my money back for the trees. I would just hate to loose the year and have to start over next. I do not care if I have to use chemicals a couple of years since they will not bare fruit for 4-5 years. How can i get rid of the disease by any means? Thank you for any help

I agree the roots are the part of the plant having the problem. It looks like the mix is a purchased potting mix,mostly peat. It may be retaining too much water, or may have had fertilizer or other additives with chemicals the plant is not able to use. Be sure the pot is not in a saucer that inhibits the drainage. Al

presuming they dont want to build their own Al's mix ...

would they.. growing this TREE .. be better off with a cactus type bagged mix??? with its very high drainage???? .. or perhaps.. a 50/50 mix of their stuff and cactus mix????

the problem with high peat and trees is that it retain too much water ... and can get cold at night.. and cold wet soil leads to the suggested root problems ... and root problems usually end with root rots.. so jean was right both ways.. lol ...

the bottom pic.. looks like the peat is completely dried out ... but that might be an optical illusion ...

ergo ipso facto .. you need a better media ...

BTW.. are they outside.. or indoors.. perhaps lack of proper light level isnt helping ...

wait a minute ... you grew excessive water roots.. then potted it??? ... did you tent is at all.. until the water roots could adjust to the media???? .. if not.. add severe transplant shock to everything else ....

one thing for sure.. the native range of avocado is not a peat bog.. though i couldnt find a map of such ... lol

success is all about the growth tip ... if that continues to look good.. then who cares if it sheds all its leaves .. on some level you have to have faith in the tip.. and not worry about the old leaves ... otherwise.. you tend to try to love things to death ...

ps: that little dish of media behind to the right looks dry.. always wet your media PRIOR to use .... peat is known to be near water repellant at times .. and you will never know.. if the middle of the pot has damp or dry media ...
