wanted: source for bulk marigold seeds

I am looking for recommendations for source(s) to mailorder marigold seeds in bulk, at reasonable cost. I need a lot to use as cover crop to help control root knot nematodes. The small seed packets available from most nurseries are too expensive and they give you few seeds. Thanks for your help.

This won't be any help if you want the seed for planting this spring but I've collected very large amounts of marigold seeds from public plantings such as found at hospitals, medical clinics, etc. I'd go in & briefly explain that I was collecting the seeds & deadheading the spent blossoms so they'd continue to bloom. I've never been refused & many seemed happy that someone was keeping the small gardens looking neat.

Most public places like that don't have much variety in annuals so marigolds are common but sometimes cosmos, snapdragons, & a few others can be gleaned this way.

A decade or so ago there was a mail order company called Stokes that had larger quantities of many seed. I do not recall if marigold seed were among their offerings but the internet has made it easy, sometimes, to check on such things.

Their home page linked below says they have flower and garden seed in amounts from $5 to $100,000.

thanks, I know that Forsyth county doesn't have free anything. And I can't pile it up anywhere, I have no flat surfaces except part of my driveway. I am already worrying that my neighbors are going to have a fit when I have it delivered if it stinks at all. I know that the mushroom compost I buy in bags still stinks pretty bad and I have neighbors whose kids regularly run across my front lawn while they are playing (I don't mind since they are usually playing with my kid) so I am also wondering if the compost topdressing is going to become a huge issue with litle feet tracking it into the house? Do I want to do this? Will it be worth the effort? I know the sod went down on pure fill dirt, we have no topsoil so I am guessing I should do it, but since bermuda is such a weed anyway will it be worth it. If I just continue to fertilize but use something organic like corn meal now, will that be enough? We had a lawn service for a couple of years so our lawn is okay looking. I know I should post this in the organinc forum, but figure since not too many areas use Bermuda grass you guys might know better.

My experience is with Promix bought in bales, that seems to work fine. What are you trying to grow? Maybe you will want to just buy the components in bulk and mix up your own. You can grow a lot of different kinds of plants in bark mixed with sand, with slow release fertilizer added. Use a higher proportion of sand for those types wanted more drainage or aeration than usual.

I'd say it would depend on how much they wanted to grow for a trial. I think commercial planting density can run from 3000 to 6000 plants to an acre. I don't know that there are any large scale commercial producers growing out bhuts, and the people who do have seeds charge a premuim for them, at least I've never seen bulk pricing mentioned. The best I've seen from random overseas companies is something on the order of $5 per 50 seeds, not bad, but if you're getting stung you could waste a whole season. My thought would be that they might have to grow out their own seed stock after buying a small lot of seed from a reliable source. In theory, growing 50 plants in isolation cages, getting 20 peppers from each with 10-15 viable seeds per pepper would give them 10000-15000 seeds for next season. 1000 peppers would give them enough to do several small scale test runs of products to see if they really wanted to devote any acres to commercial scale production. I've been considering starting a hobby hot sauce/salsa company to have something to do with all the garden stuff I currently give away when I've put up as much as we'll use in a year. It's also fun to play 'what if demand exploded' and think about converting the family farm over to growing heirloom tomatoes/exotic peppers/ heirloom garlic and onions. (I've spent some time thinking about this while staring at the rain keeping me out of the garden) When you start talking about growing acres of the stuff that's not normally grown commercially, it appears to me that you're going to be stuck growing out your own seed stock.

While I prefer paper coin envelopes, I've gotten small pill vials from my pharmacist along with dozens of those little silicon dessicant capsules that come in pill bottles ... FREE! Just ask friendly like and go ahead and tell him what you're gonna use'm for. He may give you a funny look, but he'll save up some vials and dessicant capsules for you.

I order from Stokes Seeds every year. They are a great source for multi ounce packages of various seeds. They have extensive Marigold collections. While you're at it, they have Calliopsys,Centaurea and Eschinolza in bulk ounce that would also work for you. Order their catalog too, it cotains very good germination info for all the seeds. Prices are very reasonable.

One other option in buying the seed in retail stores is checking with Walmart (if you're not opposed to the store)when the seeds displays go up. Last year they had 3 displays, one under the walmart brand, one under the Burpee brand and a 'generic.' The generic seeds started at 10 cents and went up to a quarter. The marigold seeds were 10 cents and I had 100% germination with them.

Send me an envelope and I will send you hundreds of seeds. I have marigolds in my garden and they came up from last years seeds they are everywhere!!!!They are the small dark orange seeds with yellow in the middle. DOchoa7228@juno.com
