No personal experience, but it appears there are strong germination inhibitors in the mesocarp (flesh of the fruit) and care must be taken to clean the seed -

"Typically, the seeds are soaked in water at room tem-perature for 48 to 72 hours (Schulte and others 1992). Treated seeds germinate in 20 to 25 days with a germination rate of 50 to 80 percent "

"The seeds are sown in seedbeds or directly in containers with two seeds per container. It is recommended to use a light and permeable substrate, maybe because inhibitors need to be washed out before the seeds can germinate. Germination starts after about two weeks and is normally terminated after four weeks"

Thanks for that information...can you tell me where you found it (I've been looking all over)? I'd like to know what is meant by cleaning the seed.

The germination inhibitor would be in the pulp surrounding the seed - you'll want to scrub, then soak, changing the water daily for about 3 days. The comment about substrate and leaching would make me think it wouldn't hurt to rinse under running water as you are changing the water you soak the seeds in too.

FYI - berries and fruit with strong germination inhibitors are sometimes best pretreated by birds, passing the seeds through their digestive systems. And the suggestion to scrub a particularly inhibited seed 3 x per day for 7 days is not completely unusual either :)

Try placing a few seeds in a baggie of moist spaghnum. Put in a warm place.

Is there a way of telling whether the tree is a male (seedless) or femail tree (dirty dropping seed and debris?)
My experience is seeds begin appearing when the tree is about six feet tall and it would be nice to plant only male pepper trees near your home or building.
