howdy ponders!

Well I'm finally back after a little snafu with the computer, thank goodness we got extended coverage. Anyway I have been working on the pond and don't have to go to the library to post/ask questions anymore. Here's a progress picture:

This picture is a little out of date becase I put the liner in yesterday and finished the bottom drain install.

now what's left is pump installation and the waterfall and coping and filling.

Any suggestions for the waterfall, I plan to fully hide the wier.

nice dig out, looks like it;s concrete it's so smooth.
Waterfall can be covered with rocks or plants. You might have to get bigger rocks at the base and transition up. If not it will begin to look like a fireplace.

1. PVC or flex are both good, and I have used both. I am currently in the middle of a rebuild also, and I will be using rigid sch 40 PVC 4" as the piping leading from my bottom drain. 2. I have a pump hidden inside the skimmer and another at the last phase of my chain of filter tubs, which will draw from the BD. As Joe 09 mention, an external pump is an excellent choice. They are expensive, but I'm told they are more energy efficient. 3. I know of no reason why burying the biofilter would affect the efficiency of the bacteria. Just make sure you have a suitable method of cleaning, such as being able to lift the bio bags to rinse in a separate tub of pond water. Most people have them above ground, though, so they can simply aggitate the media and then open a valve to drain. 4 & 5 ?? 6. I just use waterfall foam purchased at Lowes or Home Depot. I've tried cheaper varieties, but for some reason they didn't set up properly.

I think each market is different. In a winter climate a pond and even a bog is a lot more work and you get less prime time in return. I was expecting my ponds at my San Jose CA house to be a big problem for selling but was surprised they turned out to be an asset. For a few buyers the pond was the key feature. A did tear down some of the ponds and filled in others with gravel converting them to bogs. It was easy to show buyers the lush plants in the bogs and that it required zero weeding and adding water once a month was all that was needed. They all seem to see the low maintenance feature of bogs. From there is was an easy sell to say if they didn't like the remaining ponds in the future they could also be filled in with pea gravel and converted into bogs. They liked having an option. A lot of people wonder what they would do with pond if they didn't like it and think it's a huge deal to remove. Also I explained to families with small kids that the pond could be filled with gravel and then gravel removed as kids got older. Add to that a few "ponds are such great ways for kids to learn about nature" and they were sold. The house did end up selling to people with small kids and they wanted the ponds to stay. I had offered to convert all ponds to bogs to all buyers. People love the lush look... But worry about maintenance. Once they see the gravel and the pots they seemed to understand it was low maintenance. I also think not having a bunch of complex looking filters helped. These ponds only had a skimmer and UV which was off and had been off for more than a year. I also had a vacuuming system which was easy for people to relate to, they understood vacuuming.

I think you need to find an engineering or construction site. Dam building is a special endeavor, you are impounding a lot of water, and failure can be a downstream disaster. Before that you need to find out if your plan is legal, if it requires permits. Having "shares" makes it sound like regulated water.

If you buy land in an unincorporated area (outside city limits) that is zoned ag no one cares if you make a pond. If you build in city limits or buy land in an HOA community you will have to follow the rules. I would definitely hire an electrician for any electrical stuff but the rest could be diy. My dh is pretty handy and could do electrical stuff but I would feel better making sure everything is properly grounded etc. Of course, you can go totally solar.. A lot of people build ponds here.

Wow! I can't wait to see the final product.

As a newbie who inherited her pond from the previous owners of our house, it't neat to see the whole process that people go through to get to that final product.

WOW! Isn't it satisfying? A few tallish periennials around the waterfall to soften it and 2 lawn chairs on the patio for you and DH! Looking great! More pix when you finish planting please!

I can't wait to see your "this year's pics" of your pond. I have a new this year's pond, but is looking for ideas to finish the pond surrounding. Since it's getting later in the year, close to fall, I am hoping for a real mild winter, so I will have some time to hopefully add more plantings to my pond area.
