Umm, what ARE and Chamblee's sells that is going to survive a Pennsylvania zone 5 winter gives you a selection of about 2 plants, one of which is The Fairy. If you like The Fairy, go for it.

If you want good rebloomers with fragrance, you want rugosas. Jens Munk is a nice pink. Therese Bugnet strictly speaking isn't necessarily a rugosa, but is another nice pink with good winter interest. Most of the whites require deadheading. If you can find R. rugosa albo-plena it will self clean. True reds are heavily hybridized, and aren't as reliable as the magenta near species.

Getting something as this point in time may be tricky. Generally, we order bareroots in January-February for shipping at planting time. We don't necessarily order with the idea the plants will be shipped on receipt of order.

I have ordered Scepter'd Isle, Heritage and Mary Rose from Chamblee's, all are various shades of pink that come back very well after winter in my Zone 5 garden and I don't winter-protect. Mary Rose isn't especially fragrant, Heritage is very fragrant, Scepter'd is somewhere in between. You might also try some Buck roses for cold-hardiness--Chamblee's has a lot of them. My Country Dancers (two of them from Chamblee's) don't have a lot of winter kill, and have a classic HT shape that your mom may like. I don't think they have much fragrance, though. I'm trying Quietness this year also--you might give that a look. As far as whites/reds, I'll leave that to others.

I looked on the ARE and Chamblee website and saw many roses that are hardy to zone 5, but since I don't have experience growing roses up there I was looking for advice. I was thinking about the buck roses as I have read on here that they are cold hardy. Country Dancer sounds like a great idea. Thanks!

Marchesa Boccella is an outstanding rose, with fragrance that is out of this world.

I forgot to mention a few Austin roses. Eglantyne is my best performing rose. It has delicious fragrance, lovely large pink blooms.

Sharifa Asma is another fine rose, with wonderful fragrance and lovely pale pink blooms.

The Hybrid Perpetual rose La Reine is another fine antique rose. It has large, medium pink blooms and great fragrance.

For PA important question is: Does she plan to spray or not. If not, most Austins most probably are not the best option.

I love La Reine, I almost ordered it for myself. Glad to hear you have had good experience with it. Do you know anything about Baronne Prevost? Or how Caldwell Pink would do in your area? I like Marchesa Boccella but didn't see it on ARE or Chamblees site. The austin roses are another good idea,just wasnt sure how they would grow there. I know she would like Sharifa.

Dallas, out here in CA, Baronne Prevost can make a sprawling climber.
I don't know how it is for blackspot, but it is the best HP we've ever had
for resisting rust and mildew.
And the bloom is exquisite.

La Reine can have some problems with powdery mildew here, and also may rust
in late fall,
But neither is bad enough to send her on her way.

So far she only has Hybrid Teas as that is all that is available in her area. I want to expand her horizons and send her a few OGRs and floribundas. She has not sprayed in the past and has had terrible results. I think she is going to try a few organic methods this spring to combat blackspot. I guess she will also have to worry about the JB's, we don't see many of them down here, and if we do the geckos probably eat them.

I was thinking about Eutin and Valentine. I see that these are hardy to zone 5. I bought them both about a mont ago and love them. Valentine has been in constant bloom for me and Eutin is getting ready to start. I saw that Marie Pavie is hardy to zone 5..another one of my favorites.

Marchesa Boccella should be on the Antique Rose Emporium site... I bought mine from there, I think they still sell it....

I also grow Baronne Prevost, love the blooms and fragrance. It's somewhat new to the garden, planted two years ago. I'll put a link below to some pics I posted last summer.

I do see some blackspot late in the season on these roses.

Caldwell Pink, I'm not familiar with...

Marie Pavie is usually not so resistant to BS in mid Atlantic. At least it has very poor resistance here and in CT where I used to live before MD.

She lives about 40 miles east of Pittsburgh.

Dallasguy, if your mom loves pink, she'll adore 'EARTH SONG'.

I grow this Buck shrub in central Illinois, and it does not have to be sprayed as it is a Earthkind rose. It is loaded with blooms all summer, and is very winter-hardy with little protection other than mulch at its base.

I am zone 5 - Valentine is good. It is a low grower for me and it has no scent but that darn thing does not stop blooming. I have 4 plants of it.
I also have a cutie that I originally got from chamblees but they no longer stock it - ARE does I think: Pink rosette - cutest darn little floribunda rose.
Also the david austin english roses do really well here. They are a mixed bag as far as rebloom. But I do say this - they kind of quit late july august when it gets really hot. But the japanese beetles are at their peak here, so it is a plus that you don't have to go out and cut the flowers and bring them in if don't want a big gross infestation on one bud. The english roses also are the latest to keep blooming though and come into their own when the temps cool down.
I recommend at least one austin english rose.

I like the austin english rose: "heritage" as it has a great scent. Although mine is grafted - not from chamblees. I got austin's the generous gardener from chamblees own root and that thing is very vigorous and very cold hardy. We had -21F here this winter. and the canes are mostly green still!

I recommend buck roses - I like carefree beauty, and prairie star is a good white which looks like a hybrid tea and makes a good cut flower as it has longer stems. Although rebloom could be better on that. Nice scent - kind of citrusy and light. There are some buck varietes that have failed for me though.

I am a zone 5 gardener and went onto Chamblees to see what they have that both had little to no blackspot and also survived winter well from my garden. Here are the ones that fit both those qualifications for my garden: Sea Foam (I train it up through a obelisk rather than let it spread), The Fairy, Earth Song, Quietness, Abraham Darby, Gertrude Jekyll, The Prince, Carefree Wonder, Ebb Tide, Gruss an Aachen. I have a lot of the others, but I would say these fit those two criteria best. Of those, my favorties are Sea Foam, Quietness and Gruss an Aachen.

Thanks for all your input. I have a 3 carefree beauty. It is a great bloomer for me, and I didn't think about including it in the list. Here in TX I see it sold as an earthkind rose, it is not "marketed" as a Bucks rose. So it looks like Earth Song, Carefree Beauty, Valentine, Baronne Prevost....probably will do Gruss an Aachen too. Still looking for a white or yellow....I will check out Praire Star.

I don't understand why the "garden centers" up north at lowes and HD don't sell the bucks roses. Why do they sell hybrid teas that aren't going to do well the the climate? Maybe to have people treat them like "annuals" so they will have to replace them every year? Of course I am sure they all stock the "knockouts"...after discovering what other amazing old roses that are out there I am SOOOO over those! The knockouts are nice landscape plants, but they have lost their personality(if they had any) with overplanting. I am just tired of seeing them....

Forgot to add two yellow Bucks that do great and bloom constantly are GOLDEN UNICORN and PRAIRIE SUNRISE.

GU stays on the smaller, neater size, while PS is taller. Again, both are reliabily winter-hardy and prolific bloomers. The only downside to these 2 Bucks is the darn Japanese beetles really find them delicious, so that's something to consider if your mom is in an area where they are a problem.

Another yellow I really love that didn't seen to suffer from the JBs and was a bloom machine is HONEY BOUQUET. I planted it last year and absolutely loved, loved it. One of my best yellows. Appears to have made it through this past winter okay, even though we had several days of -22F days in January.

Unfortunatly, from what I remember growing up she is in an area with tons of japanese beetles. On the recommendation of others on the rose forum I put in Honey Bouquet in my gardent the beginning of March. I am anxious to see how it does here. If I like it I will send it to her later. I think I am going to start a tradition of sending rose plants to her for mothers day instead of a flower arrangement. It is something she can enjoy for a longer period of time.

I used to grow Eutin in Nebraska which, if I remember correctly, is Zone 5. In fact, it was my very first rose--which means I had no idea what I was doing. Despite my ignorance, it grew well and survived the winters on its own. No disease problems. Very showy large red clusters of blooms periodically throughout the summer. Most reliable rose I've ever grown.
