my older kitten and my new kitten help please!!!!!

I have a kitten who has just turned 12 months old, he is a very energetic kitten and also very loving. i live in a flat, he is mainly a house cat but i let him have a little wander now and again. when he plays he is quite rough, he bites (not hard just little nips) and uses his claws, we also play pounce but when i have had enough he goes for a chill or comes for a cuddle. his name is padfoot and everyone always says how cool he is....

anyway, my friend rang the other day and she said a family she knows has got some kittens and do i want one, i was unsure because i didnt want another kitten to join the family and ruin padfoots personality (because he is so loving),anyway, i arrived at the house and it stank, they had dogs kittens cats, guinea pigs hamsters etc, there was food and poo on the floor, there were 3 kittens in total, 1 had a home and 2 where left. one of the ones left was crazy and jumping about and scratchin everyone, the other was cuddly and contented sleeping. i felt so sorry for them, i had to take one, i would of took both of the ones left if i lived in a bigger place and my cat was a 'go outer'.(i did ring the rspca tho and aksed them to check it out, the family was nice enough but i believe if u have a pet u should be responsible... they hadnt got the mother cat spayed and she was pregnant again :-( ) ... anyway (sorry i always ramble) i brought the little one home, i was expecting hisses and attacks, but i didnt get that...padfoot followed the little one around for a bit, licked him and then started to play. i did some reading on the internet about keeping the new kitten in a seperate room till they adjust, this is working well... padfoot and the little un claw each other under the door and padfoot cries to be with him and visa versa... they are so cute together, they havnt slept next to each other as of yet, but sleep in the same room (with my supervision) on a night the little one sleeps in the other room with his food litter tray and toys... padfoot sleeps on the other side of the door for a bit then comes and gets on my bed (like normal)

my problem is that when padfoot plays, he is fine for a bit but gets too rough and hurts the little one, i know he is only playin but when the little one yelps its distressing to hear, padfoot backs off as soon as i call his name... they chase each other for ages (padfoot stalks him then the little un stalks padfoot) padfoot even lets the little one share his food... i dont however as its adult food.

the reason iam asking this question is, will padfoot calm down soon and stop being so rough? am i doing the right thing shouting his name when they get too rough? and am i doing the right thing full stop?

i havnt found anything on the internet about rough players and all my vet said was 'love padfoot more' so i always give him treats and cuddles.

any help would be really appreciated (even just general tips about introducing a new kitten to the older one).... thanx for reading my message!!

When we had 2 cats, we subsequently had a daughter. One cat did fine. The other cat had to be put on PROZAC. I'm not kidding. She was wetting out of the box, it was a mess.

We ended up giving them to another home due to the problems.

PS. Report the other family to animal control. Sounds like a bad situation for animals, and owners alike.

And, as pointed out this is a Water Garden board. Not a Kitty Litter board.

I agree with using plastic forks, but you also need to encourage them to look for an alternative place to use, which is not located on your property. If you simply deter them from the pots, they may, on their own choose a different spot in your garden which bothers you even more. A simple solution, until you can find someone to rescue them is to, at the same time you install the plastic forks in your pots, pour some small mounds of sand about double the diameter of your pots onto the vacant lot in an area which will not bother you, but make sure it is an equal distance from where the mother nests them and where they currently find your pots. weekly either use a litter sifter to locate and discard the feces or give them a new small pile of sand poured a short distance from their previously used sand, but which faces away from your lot. Once you have installed the plastic forks in your pots, if you find that the cats do start or already are using your garden or flower beds, simple begin the process of mulching those beds with dried pine cones. Insert each pinecone's base a few inches deep into the soil, while keeping 2-3 inches sticking out above ground level. Keep in mind though that if the soil is already very acidic, then lime might have to be added to your beds to counteract additional acid, if any, that the pinecones add to the soil.

I just lost my precious baby boy, Romeow, to FIP this morning. I had only had him for two weeks and he was only "normal" for about two days. Then the loss of appetite started, weight loss, lethargy. We took him to the vet (twice) where they gave us meds for hookworms and antibiotics for fever but he just became more and more lethargic and sad. I had to feed him with a syringe and give him the high-vitamin cat gel. Anyway, he just seemed worse and worse so I took him to the emergency vet this morning and his little tummy was so swollen, his third eyelids had been showing for the last few days and his gums were white. They drew fluid from his abdomen and they said it was likely that he had FIP. I had him put down because I didn't want him to suffer. I've been crying non-stop since then, and I also have five kids who are heart-broken. I AM SO ANGRY AT THE BREEDER. She eluded that something could be wrong with him (AFTER WE PURCHASED HIM). She wanted us to put him to sleep without even trying to figure out what was going on with him! I'm so sad I can't even think straight right now. Even in two short weeks he was such a wonderful little guy. I miss him so much.

Lisa, as explained, Ragdoll is a breed and it's sometimes confused with similar breeds but Ragdolls have unique patterns of color all their own but all are born white and take several years to fully develop their pattern. Lots of people think they found a ragdoll and there are certainly many listed as such on Petfinders that are not Ragdoll - there are subtle differences in the patterns from birman etc. Ragdolls have gorgeous blue eyes and that most fabulous soft fur. My girls are about 14 pounds and the two boys are over 21 pounds and they are not fat, just large cobby shaped bones and well, large cats. Their breed standard calls for a cat that can be larger than Maine coon cats. The plus with a large cat is that they can get into things most cats can't reach - my silly boys like to rumage through tall garbage cans LOL Toilets lids are kept shut so no unofficial drinks. They are very laid back, lazy cats. Sue, I don't think you'll have any problems introducing a kitten to an adult male but I'm not certain. Our girls were about 3 years old when we adopted the two boys who were about a year and a half old. LOL we had this plan for a slow introduction but Ragdolls are strong, large and smart. Either the girls or the boys kept opening the doors to the room where we were keeping the boys. LOL We used a skipping rope to try to tie the door shut - silly things managed to get that undone too. So our carefully planned introduction took about an hour with all the cats running all around the house and finally settled down and that was it. I have to say when they run around the house they sound like a herd of elephants - so much for delicate, graceful moves. I also think Max might just be thrilled to have a play mate because he's just a big kitten himself. Max still has some growing to do - they take about 4 years to fully mature. Does he do the Ragdoll flop - that is where they are walking across the floor and just out of the blue decide to go from standing to flopped all over the floor? Most cats sit and then lie down and then sprawl, but ragdolls just flop to a sprawl. They are the most dog like of cats, greet you, want to be with you and are very docile. I would also close the bedroom door so she can't get in there. My cat has never once gone outside the litterbox. When she was little we had a small box. As she got bigger we had to go to a mortar pan because she likes to dig a lot. DH cleans it out at least once a day. We use scoopable litter now, but when she was little and we used regular litter, he would scoop the solids daily and toss the entire thing once a week. Where is the litter box located? Does the house have multiple levels? How old is she? When my kitty was little we would put her in an empty bedroom (no bed). She had food, water and a pan in there. As she got bigger we put the food and water in the kitchen and put the pan near the stairs to the basement. Finally, we moved the pan to the basement.

Kittens do play rough, it is normal unless blood is drawn.

I frequently hit the forums and go from birds, to wildlife, to pets, to ponds then then the KT. I am sure this poster though they were on the pets forum. I bet your kitties will be fine, I got a new kitten last year, my 3 yr old cat did not like at first...now they romp and play....and fight, but would be lost without each other!...Just dont let them out near your fish pond if you have one! LOL
