Help! When to plant perennial bulbs outdoors in pots?

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum (and rather new to gardening as well!) I live in NJ (zone 6 I believe) and only have an apt with a balcony... thus I am interested in container planting. I'd like to plant some perennial bulbs to bloom in late spring/early summer. Thoughts? I'd prefer tall flowering perennials in bright colors. What about daffodils? Iris? Gladiolus? Other ideas? (I'm emphasizing tall and colorful!) When do I plant the bulbs?

I read on some websites that you should plant in the fall... but it's too late now. If I plant now, would it work? Even though it is freezing cold here now?

Any insight or advice would be most helpful including: when to plant, what to plant, and how to plant! Thanks!

Debbie
