Melody Parfume or Blue Nile?

I have Melody Parfumee but not Blue Nile. Melody has a wonderful fragrance, and the blooms are very pretty. It got almost 5 feet tall the first season it was planted bareroot. I spray, but it didn't have any extra problems with disease. It starts out a darker purple, then lightens up to a light lavender. It didn't get pink at all.

I have Melody Parfumee now and used to have Blue Nile at my other house. Both are fragrant. Melody Parfumee really blackspots in my yard, but adding Messenger to the spray program helps that problem considerably. The plant has plenty of flowers all season.

Blue Nile was another story. At my house in WA state, it had only 4 or 5 flowers per year. It would only bloom when the temperature was below 65F. The flowers were quite large, had a nice, clear color, and a good smell. They were also seen on the show tables. Blue Nile did make a showing in the Pacific Northwest. How it will do in the midwest is not known. I am not growing it here at the moment. Alternatives to this rose are Shi-Un, Charles DeGaulle, Blueberry Hill, and Silverado. Fragrant Plum can do quite well if given a chance. All the mauves/lavenders particularly benefit if Messenger is added to the spray program.

Here's what I have (keep in mind I rarely remember scents unless they really stand out): THE PRINCE - over 10yrs, in the ground; not the best bloomer, small blooms QUIETNESS - 8yrs or so, in the ground; gorgeous blooms, good repeat RADIO TIMES - 3-4yrs, in the ground, in semi-shady spot; hasn't bloomed much, but when it does is lovely and long-lasting EVELYN - 4-5yrs, in the ground; only bloomed a few times, not that great MARILYN MONROE - over 10yrs, in the ground in beating sun; gorgeous monstrous blooms, excellent repeat, verrrrry thorny! OVER THE MOON - got last yr, was in a pot until fall I put it in the ground; had lovely long-lasting blooms and gave me two flushes WILD BLUE YONDER - about 4-5yrs, just planted in the ground this winter; did very well in a big ceramic pot, love the blooms, usually a lot of them and decent repeat PETER MAYLE - 3+yrs, just planted in the ground; did not bloom hardly at all in a pot in decent sunlight MELODY PARFUMEE - around 14yrs, in the ground; great plant, good rebloom, lots of blooms, not much scent for the name tho MOTHER OF PEARL - 2yrs, in a big pot; first yr was slow, last yr blooming fool! SPECIAL OCCASION - over 12yrs, in the ground; one of the best on your list, good repeat, gorgeous blooms, lots of them; bloomed waaay into fall STRIKE IT RICH - a few yrs, in the ground; can count on one hand how many blooms I've seen SOUTH AFRICA - last yr, in a big pot; OMG excellent first yr rose, tons of gorgeous blooms, excellent repeat, scent in early blooms was "to-die-for" delicious sweet fruity!!! Love it! CHARLES DARWIN - in the ground, first one died in first yr, got a replacement last yr, haven't seen one bloom yet... oh wait, maybe there was one before the first one died JUBILEE CELEBRATION - over 12yrs, in the ground; pretty blooms, not that great of repeat COTILLION - 4-5yrs, in the ground; love the color, small blooms, not great repeat WILLIAM MORRIS - several yrs?, in the ground; only one time did it bloom CROWN PRINCESS MARGARETA - 4-5yrs, in the ground; rarely blooms, may be in too much shade ENGLISH PERFUME - got last yr, sm OR in a pot; blooms I've seen so far were beautiful.... I think it's gonna be a "killer!" PARADISE FOUND - last yr, in a big pot; never bloomed once! LOUISE CLEMENTS - got a few yrs ago, was very tiny OR, in the ground; has never bloomed STAR OF THE NILE - 5-6yrs, was in a pot until this fall; took a couple yrs to take off, but I think now it's gonna be really good. The couple blooms I got last season were very pretty and last a long time.

BLUE NILE is notorious for only blooming in cool weather. There are alternatives but each has its own problems. CHARLES DE GAULLE is supposed to be healthy but stingy with the blooms. BLUE MOON is a good choice, if indeed you can get Blue Moon and not the Blue Girl imposter. LAGERFELD is my favorite, but you already have it. I've been dying to try PARADISE, and it is one of the more highly rated mauves.

Of course, if you like beauty AND health, then you just can't go wrong with REINE DES VIOLETTES.

Thanks for the comments. It sounds like I'll be happier with Melody Parfumee. I forgot to mention that I have both Paradise and Reine des Violettes. They were both new last year and didn't bloom much so I can't judge them yet. I did look into Blue Moon (which Palatine has in stock) but the pictures on helpmefind show it looking pink at times. I've been curious about Shi-Un but only Hortico has it as far as I can find, and I didn't want to order from Hortico this year.

The big drawback here for Melody Parfumee is that it fades very badly, from rich lavender to--faded lavender. I think your sun in WI is not so intense, though, being at a more northerly latitude, so you may not have that problem.

How about 'Heirloom'--- a wonderful HT that is quite the showstopper!!! Pumps out multitudes of richly colored, heavenly scented blooms all summer long!!! This rose is absolutely to die for gorgeous and HEALTHY!!! I am quite impressed with my two year old plant!!!

I think DiggerDave has a wonderful specimen, with photos too, maybe on the gallery side.

I like the fading of Melody Parfumee in the picture that Nancy posted, so I don't think that will be a problem for me. The sun is less intense here too due to both latitude and altitude.

I've considered Heirloom, but the pictures on helpmefind do show it turning pink at times. I may get one eventually though as it does seem to be a nice rose.

I have Melodee Parfumee and really like it. Heirloom has been a steady performer for me along with Intrigue. (I have a purple rose fetish.) One that I have been really happy with is called "Shocking Blue." The leaves are really glossy and it blooms nonstop. I got it at Home Depot last year and have been really impressed by it.

Of course, Angel Face is always up there on my list, too. Paradise is pretty but doesn't have much scent.

I grow several mauve roses including Melody Parfumee, Lagerfeld, Wild Blue Yonder, Neptune, and Fragrant Plum. I grew Stainless Steel but it was such a dog that I shovel pruned it the second year. It was a disease magnet and never bloomed worth a hoot. I am on my second Neptune as the first bush bloomed once and then refused to grow and bloom anymore so I got rid of it as well. This second Neptune I am glad to report is doing much better and I am hoping that this year--it's second--it will continue to impress me.
Quite by accident I ended up with two bushes of Fragrant Plum, but that has been okay as they are both growing and blooming right as rain.

I am most pleased with Melody Parfumee as it has been a very vigorous and healthy growing bush and it blooms alot. The blooms are very fragrant and last a long time on the bush. My flowers do not fade much if any before they need to be deadheaded. I would recommend it highly to anyone.

Melodie Parfumee only lasted 2 years here. It would have a huge flush and then just sit forever and then have another nice flush before fall... I like flowers that have a steady stream of blooms, so although it was vigorous and the flushes were amazing, I replaced it with Shocking Blue.

I had Blue Nile which was bluer than Blue Girl and Blue Moon. It is used quite often by hybridizers as it is a lot more 'blue' than other mauves. Other than that it is pretty useless as a garden plant, the blooms fade fast, don't like the heat and are stingy. I replaced it with Neptune.

Heirloom was one of my best and brightest. First to bloom, constant bloomer, great color, (the pink you see on HMF has more to do with the cameras than the flowers) and when it started defoliating from black spot one year I was so sad to see it go (I don't spray) I have replaced it with Love Potion.

Good medium mauves are hard to find...
