What zone are you in? Here in KS zone 6, we have that problem because of late, hard freezes. As a result, we sometimes have to prune back within a few inches of the ground to get down below those black areas. The good news is that the hybrid teas spring back rather quickly, though they may not be a tall as usual. Fortunately, my old and new shrubs tend to be hardier than the hybrid teas, so I don't have to do drastic pruning on them. I might worry a bit if I had to prune them that low--although I'd expect the stronger established ones to recover sooner or later--perhaps later. It's really important that you get down below the black stuff. That cane may look like it is going to grow leaves/blooms despite the black stuff, but you'll probably find that after the spring bloom, you plant has no energy left and it will decline rapidly. Its better to do the severe pruning (if it is needed) earlier while the plant can still take advantage of the big spring burst of growth to help with its recovery. For the all black or brown canes, no pity--cut as low as possible--and hope that stimulates the rose to push out new canes. Good luck. Kate

You should be watering in the morning (before 9) and if you have weed mat and mulch down, every day is way too much....once a week should be sufficient. I don't know that your plants will thrive in the long term when planted in clay... You might have amended the entire bed for a couple years with peat and gypsum prior to planting.

Cody, really need to know where you are and what type of blueberries you bought. It does sound like fertilizer burn. Blueberries are very sensitive to salt and can be burned by dry fertilizer. But your water could also cause problems if it is high in bicarbonates. Usually that would occur over a couple of weeks, not days. Blueberries need a low pH between 4.5 and 5.5. They need a well drained soil but also need good moisture since most of the roots are within 10 inches of the surface.
