hi kriswrite, Unfortunately what you have there is not a kiwi plant at all!The kiwi seeds need a cold period before they will germinate. I stratified some arguta seeds this past winter in the fridge for about 4 months and then for about 4 weeks cycling them in the fridge half a day and then out into the cool basement and back into the fridge to simulate spring(not sure if it was necessary but it worked)I then left them in the cool basement(about 52F 11 Celcius)and had them sprout in about 2 weeks,had just about 100% germination. If you want to try it again extract the seeds from the fruit and immediately place them on a moist paper towel(don't let them dry out) and put them in the fridge. good luck!

Most broms have perfect/bisexual flowers (i.e. both male and female parts in the same flower), but many are simply not self-compatible on a genetic level. On the other end of the spectrum, some are habitual self-pollinators and not receptive to outside pollen. Still others fall somewhere in between. There's no way to really know which is which except by observation of their habits over time and experimenting with it. There are some exceptions to the perfect flower rule. As mentioned, Cryptanthus have two types of flowers-- some have both male and female parts, others only male. These both occur on the same plant, however, which classifies Crypts as "monoecious". Aechmea mariae-reginae and Androlepis skinneri are both dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers occur on separate plants. These have no "perfect" flowers. I think there may be some Hechtias that fall into this category too? Somebody may correct me on that or have some other anomalies to add to the list.

Veronica, I'm a gardening newbie as well, but here is what I've learned recently. The male flowers are on stems, like regular flowers. The females are on the end of the fruit itself. I didn't know if I would be able to tell the difference until I found the first female yesterday. Here's a photo. You can definitely see the beginnings of a zucchini.

No you don't need to see the bottom of the flower, the stamen of the male flowers is very noticeably different than the pistil of the female flower. The ovary at the base of the flower is just a second way to tell the two apart. The flower is a squash flower, it looks like a summer squash because the plant is rather compact.
