What should I plant now?

I know you plant spring blooming bulbs in the fall but are there any seeds that are best planted in the fall for spring or summer blooming? I live in zone 5/6 and have lots of seeds from trades but I don't know if I should wait until next year to plant them or if some can go in now? I have too many to look them up so I thought if someone could tell me what types (if any) of seeds could be planted now, I would appreciate it.

Sure! Hi there fellow buckeye!

In the late fall I plant marigolds, larkspur, nigella, columbine, strawflower, lunaria (biennial) nicotiana, and 4:00s. I'm thinking about sweet william as well, although it's a biennial.
Now these are annuals and I don't expect them to germinate until spring.

If you're thinking about perennials, it's a bit too late for that. I do summer sow perennials using the winter sowing method. I do it early to mid summer, so I can get a sufficient root system to withstand Columbus, Ohio winters.

One thing to consider is the winter sowing forum. You still have to wait two years for second year perennials, but there are plenty of first year bloomers that might scratch your itch for blooms until you get your second year reward.

Drat - where is that website link?
I found a great site that lists seeds you can sow up to 30 days before your first hard frost. That means you may still have time....

I would think that if you put them in the refrigerater for a few weeks they would come up this year. Don't put them in the freezer. I have an Allium story... Last fall I was planting Alliums when my daughter and four grandkids stopped by to visit. I was planting on the east side of the house and I left 16 bulbs in a Walmart bag out in the garden. We get lots of snow and they had to have been frozen. This spring I went around to the side of the house and saw the bag. I really expected to find mushy rotting bulbs, but instead, I found healthy, firm bulbs that were showing signs of growing. I planted them and every one came up! Nancy VB

This is the best time of the year to plant hardy trees and shrubs. I'm leaving my potted passionvines in their pots until spring, so I can bring them into the house any time it's supposed to go below 40 degrees. Passionvines, like many plants, need warmth to make new roots - it won't benefit them any to plant them now, and it might hurt or even kill them. If you plant your passionvines in poorly drained soil, they won't thrive at any time of the year - they have to have good drainage. Poor drainage can cause their roots to rot, which kills the entire plant. MissSherry

Welcome emg! Are you new to Colorado or just moved to new digs? We have 8 weeks or less of the growing season left, so if it's veggies your after, you should have time for lettuce and radishes. Without a cold frame or greenhouse, I can't think of much else you'll get a crop of before we see freezing temps. Hopefully Steve and Greg will chime in with some other choices. Maybe spinach and kale? You can plant garlic in a month or so. You can start planting perennials and trees soon, but I think it's still a little warm yet. Barb

I'm interested in the outcome of the poster's question as well. I'm a very very novice gardener at the moment. But I'm really interested in growing plants from seeds.

Unfortunately, most stores near me aren't selling seeds anymore, which led me to believe perhaps this wasn't the right time to plant seeds.

But, after reading this thread, I guess I was wrong. Any tips?

Oh, it maybe useful to know, that I can only grow indoor plants as I don't have access to an outdoor area.

From another Ohioan - I get a lot of my seeds from ebay and am really new to the whole landscaping thing. I have spent a lot of time researching and have a large yard to try many things. Because I have read so many different comments regarding the same flower or seed, etc. I have decided to take the logical advice and also do things my own way. So to save you from the mistakes I will make in the future (hopefully not many) I have recently planted from seed the following:

I am so glad you posted this. I am in the same zone, and had the same question...
Does anyone know where I can find out when the first frost is supposed to be? I see some of you have posted "as late as two months before first frost" thats why I want to find out when first frost is expected for Zone 6. I'm new in this zone and have never gardened in this zone.

Well it's been a couple weeks since I posted last on this list for anyone who is reading, that the following seeds have emerged and rooted already:
Rockey Mountain Penstemon
Firecracker Red Penstemon
Siberian Wallflower
Foxglove Strawberry Summer King
Adenephora Lady Bells
Chocolate Flower
Peony Poppy

Probably not favorites, but because of the vast variety of flowers I have around the yard, I like a little bit of everything. Hopes this helps anyone who has considered planting seed even as late as Octoberin Zone 5
