Wildlife Pond

Hi All,

I am looking at building a pond in our yard in the spring and I am doing my homework now so I have the winter to plan.

Due to time and budget constraints(no pumps or filters, running electric lines, electricity), we will be building a wildlife pond. Now here is the tricky part. There are two site I can build this, one is totally open and is in pretty much full sun all year round. The second site gets about 3-4 hours of sun from late spring to early fall, will be in between two dogwoods (15' - 20' apart) and has two weeping Japanese Maples nearby.

The pond looks to be 6' long x 5' wide x 2.5' (or 3') deep.

We would see site one more as it is near the kitchen and back deck. We would only see site two when we are out near it.

Site one seems the way to go, but isn't that too much sun? The pond would be full of algae with all that sun, right?

Any suggestions or resources or books that would help out is greatly appreciated.

I would go with site 1. I would also have the pool larger if possible especially if yor are going to share it with wild animals. And it should slope to around 3.5 feet deep with the deepest part right in the center or along the central axis and have a gradient of slope that allows for ease of entry and departure, maybe 20%, so that you could walk into it on one side and out of it on the opposite side. I would also have an area where overflow could run off into. And in line with this I would make sure to lay some pvc out to one side of it so that you can install a water tap so that you could set up a water breaker at the end of a hose or other feature so that you could run the water through the water breaker at a good speed to generate a current that could help alleviate algae. If the water is cool enough algae will have a problem gaining a foothold especially if you wash it down daily. Algae does best in very shallow pools where heat build up is severe.
Also planting is extremely important for wildlife. Depending upon your area a host of native animals and birds could be visitors. Click here to check out what you may see

Thank you for the information. I am considering a lot of factors in the placement of these ponds.

Site one isn't my number one choice for the following reasons : It is close to where we park and enter our property to go to and from the house. I am just concerned about attracting animals that we would run over them accidentally and other safety concerns.

We are in the city but close enough to the suburbs and close to a wooded area with a creek. About a mile or so.

I want to go with site two as there is not much of a canopy with the dogwoods, so I do not need to worry about things dropping into the pond. There is definite morning sun all year round, a little less in winter, but it is there. This area is also higher up on the list as it is not near the main way we go into the house. Plus I would think it would be a little more hidden as to not attract the heron. They do fly by every so often.

I am trying to be open to all points of view on this. What do you think of my concerns with the animals near where we park? Am I thinking too much into this aspect?

Thanks for any additional advice you or anyone can give.

Also, are there any real good books on building a pond/ water gardening out there? Most books I have come across skim some topics, but do not go too in depth.

c2g, Vernal ponds, dewponds, etc are great in the right location, under the right conditions. Remember that most of the ones you see on the internet are rarely located near buildings, especially homes. Most of the time they are for livestock that churn up the bottom. They are rarely filled by hoses. In England, there is a lot of rain and a lot of clay. The bottom of a clay lined pond is thick. Try Googling Bentonite lined canals to see the construction. It is tricky. I'm glad you decided not to use it to tell the truth. To the unwary, it is a disaster waiting to happen. It takes practice and a lot of willingness to get coated with unbelievably sticky messes once it gets wet. We used to live in an underground house that was topped with it and then had 2 feet of earth on top of that so I had a lot of experience in twenty years. While it did what it was supposed to do, I lost more than one pair of shoes and several pairs of jeans to it. You could not wade into the pond you want to construct. I haven't ever seen a really good book on wildlife ponds. No two ponds are ever going to be alike. But then I wanted something for fishies too. my pond is 1000 gallons and three feet deep. The birds and critters usually take over my Skippy Filter (!00 gallons)for bathing and drinking. Since my pond will never be completed(even after 12+ years), that can change from year to year. I love to experiment.You won't want anything as elaborate as Joanne and Cliff's but parts of their ponds are perfect for what you want. Check out their many videos. Just don't get intimidated. For your pond, the first thing to consider is that the ground is flat. So as you dig, pile the dirt around the outside perimeter of the pond so the pond edges will be above grade.If you plan for a filter, the tank can be positioned there so it won't be obvious. Use the link to see the Skippy. It doesn't have to be that large for your use but the concept is the same no matter the size. I have seen so many variations it is amazing. They all do the same thing. I would go with the same material. Thinner, less weatherproof materials than a stock tank are just a waste of time and money. I made mine in an afternoon. The most difficult part was tying it to the roof of my car to get it home from the Farm and Fleet store. A fifty gallon tank would do well for your plans. Before you start cutting, think it through. You can always delay it if you are unsure. For your purposes you don't need a huge pump. Figure the amount of water in the pond and get a submersible pump that moves about twice that number of gallons in an hour. There are lots of people here to advise you on brands of pumps although they usually talk about the bigger volume pumps. If you like, you can design a low waterfall with this or not. THANKS so much everyone! I apologize for not answering. I thought I had set this site up to notify me when anyone posted responses to my questions, and I NEVER got an email. Finally today I came back to the site... OK, I will try to answer questions. First off, I THINK the problem may be due, at least in some part, to my accidentally pulling all the underwater elodea out of the pond back in the winter of 2003. My Mom had just died and instead of 'pruning' the elodea, I was angry and just yanked at it, thinking that I was just breaking off the upper branches. Instead, when the water settled, it was all gone. Until then things had gone, well, swimmingly! I used the formula of covering 2/3rds the surface area with floating/emergent vegetation and 1/3 the area with underwater plants. That worked wonderfully, but I can't get elodea to grow in the pond now! I've tried restarting it every single year and it just dies on me. ...and I'm even getting it from a nearby pond whose elodea was a start from mine! My pond's water is very acidic as our well water is very acidic. I've wondered if that was the problem, but the water was acidic when I started and the elodea grew well then! And, my friend's pond where I'm getting the 'replacement' elodea is acidic too. The pond is ~24 X 20 feet with a deep end of about 3' and shallow edges (preferred by all critters). My pond still has the swimming pool liner under the black plastic (not the thin plastic of plastic bags, it's PVC sheeting). The swimming pool liner was at least 15 yrs old and one of the reasons I wanted to get rid of it was I kept having black algae growing on it and it was a pain to scrub off, so I'm not certain if it had any algicide impregnated in it or not. I waited 6 years to start cleaning the pond from when I started it; I wish I'd started at 3 years because by 6 years the muck was nearly 6" deep. The reason I waited so long is because the dragonfly and beetle nymph hide in the muck at the bottom of the pond during the winter. I'm passionate about dragonflies, having become an author and lecturer on them because of building a pond and learning about them and discovering how little was known about them. (I apologize for having to mention this - it's not advertising here, it's to let you know what my pond is all about). I've tried to drain the pond each year of the last 4. But I've had a problem: the pond has a leak, and finding it is impossible - because of the high water table in the winter, water starts flowing INTO the pond when I drain it and I can't tell exactly where it's coming from because of the dual liners. I would not recommend using plastic PVC sheeting to anyone else who was converting their pool to a pond for this reason. When I suck up the debris off the bottom, it goes into a children's wading pool and I check for 'critters' there before allowing the water and silt and debris to be just thrown away. Yes, there are rocks on all of the bottom of the pond. I had to add them to hold down the PVC liner when I built the pond. And, they are the perfect place for critters to hide, but it does make cleaning the pond much more difficult. There are ~2400 gallons of water in the pond and the waterfall pump recirculates 550-600 gallons an hour. There is also a small 'frog spitter' in one shallow end. The source of the water is our community (6 house) well. Because of the leak, we have a constant drip going into the pond. The water is very acidic (pH of only 5) and non-treatable. We have had several large water companies TRY to neutralize our water over the years, to the expense to the community of about a thousand dollars, so I really can't change that. The only filtration is that we have the pump in a bucket with a sack of river rock over it and a layer of filtration medium over the top of the bucket. I have to manually clean the filter every couple weeks. There is no foul smell of sulfur or anything, just lots and lots of little bubbles forming on the bottom that then is 'pulling' the debris up with them when they come to the surface, usually in the early evening. Also, the Pacific Tree frog eggs are dying - they just start to develop and then turn fuzzy white (mold?). I fear I have some pretty serious problems! Anyway, I feel like I'm baring my heart here, and I sincerely apologize for appearing rude - I just thought I was going to be notified when anyone posted an answer to my question. I know this group is WONDERFUL and it helped me before when my pump broke and folks, within 7 mins, told me to float the floating oil that came out of it off the pond. I want you to know that I recommend this forum in the talks I give about building wildlife ponds. I guess I'm hoping that I won't have to take this pond completely apart and start again. For so many many years it was perfect, and it's been OK the last 4, but after I tried to muck it out this year, it just got worse! Alison, INSPECT the rhyzome for soft squidgy bits that smell sickly sweet, if you find any BURN IT, I think attraction is one of the species susceptable to crown rot. I will check that but if I dont correct myself I have remembered correctly. If you find nothing odd I would suggest repotting it in either John Innes No1 or A Bowers aquatic compost and bung it in a bucket of water so you can monitor it more easliy. If your B&Q still has them B&Q had 5packs of black plastic storage bins on offer for Â£3.98 or something like that. They make excellent lily tanks for starting off. These are a semi flexible plastic unlike the standard brittle-plastic 5packs they do. The small trugs, gorillas, green or yellow double handled flexible 'buckets' are also good.

hi gg, i have 3 ponds and i notice that i get a LOT more constant enjoyment from the one that is nearest the house, that i can look at out the kitchen window when the weather is bad, and check out when i walk by on the sidewalk.
i wouldn't worry about attracting animals (assume you mean wild ones)- they will get out of the way of your car at driveway speeds. also, you are going to get animals no matter where you put the pond!

to add a little more; i wish i hadn't put goldfish into my big pond- there are only 5 left now and i am waiting for them to die off. it was supposed to be a wildlife pond, and goldfish eat the larvae of all kinds of natural pond bugs and frogs so it isn't meeting my original goal. ditto the mosquito fish (gambusia) that the state mosquito control people gave me for free- they multiply way worse than rabbits. (you can use mosquito dunks instead.)
someday i will make it a true wildlife pond again. min

If you have safety concerns for your family about encountering a wild animal, especially if you have very young children, then yes use the remote spot but realize that is no guarantee that you will not have wild animals crossing your driveway or entering other parts of your property, unless properly fenced.

Well,

I finally built it!!

It has been built on site number one, full sun and is 8' x 6'. It has a sloping beach and goes to 2' deep.

Unfortunatley, when I installed the PA fieldstone edging, I for got to wash them!!! Now the dust is in the pond and is slowly settling.

What should I do? Should I:

1.) drain the pond, clean out the muck and refill it
2.) filter out the yuck
3.) leave it.

Also, my pond right now sits slightly higher than the surrounding landscape. I still need to plant around the pond itself. Should I place dirt up to the top most part of the liner and put mulch on top of the dirt? Or should I leave a small perimeter around the pound and put in some gravel to allow any runoff to drain away fron the pond?

3. Just leave it. If it is settling out the it's out of sight, right? A natural pond has a dirt bottom anyway.

You did not mention fish, I assume you don't have any as you are not adding a filter.

BTW, if you plant the pond, especially with floating plants, you can out-compete the algae and have clear water.
