using spongy material instead of peat pots

I haven't seen any related postings, so I thought I might share my experience with some tomato seeds for this past season. I bought these 'bio-dome' seed trays that have the larger 1 3/4" dia., 3" deep. They come with the bio-sponges. Anyway, I always used the peat pots(3") for my tomato seeds, but this year I only put up six peatpots for my plum tomatoes, and I did six with the bio-sponges. I used the same variety for all twelve pots. Each pot had two seeds, but the bio-sponges germinated at a far higher percentage. After the sponge plants grew to 2-3 leaves, I moved them to plastic trays with 3" x 3", filling in with needed pot soil to hold the plant in place. By the time planting time came, those six plants in the plastic trays were so much taller and bigger than the peatpot tomatoes, I wondered why I hadn't heard of this before. I think I read somewhere that the peat pots drink up much of the needed water. I wondered if anyone else has experienced the same?
