Which are sweeter..black or red raspberries?
Comments (3)Tammy: Next time post your flavor preferences here, ask for advice, then think about it before buying the plants. I say that for two reasons: Latham and Brandywine. Latham is a very old summerbearing red raspberry. I have tried to grow it here in a climate not too different from yours. Also grew the old summerbearer Taylor. Summerbearers grow up their canes one season (primocanes), then must winter over to set fruit on the floricanes. I found that their berries were soft and crumbly, and extremely subject to mildews. Since we got so few edible berries, I finally took them out. I would be surprised if your Taylor berries do much better unless your summers are a lot less hot and humid than mine. Brandywine is actually a red/black raspberry cross, is called a purple raspberry, and is one of the most tart of all raspberry varieties. Good for jam with a little sugar. Many people like a tart berry, but if you like sweet it's not for you. If you want a sweet, full-flavored berry you might be best off with a newer variety like Caroline, which is in the everbearing category. This berry type fruits on primocanes the first season, and is capable of setting a smaller crop on overwintering canes early in the following season. However, many people cut the canes to the ground over the winter and focus only on new growth that produces the later crop, which is larger and can last for six weeks or more. I grow the everbearer Baba here, but this variety is nearly impossible to find. If it is just sweet, sweet, sweet that you want, at the sacrifice of some of the real raspberry flavor of the reds, try one of the yellow varieties like Fallgold or Kiwigold. Be careful with Fallgold, however, as it is a very aggressive spreader, and can take over your yard. Kiwigold might be a better choice for that reason alone. I grew Fallgold here, and found they were so sweet that they were particularly attractive to ants, and not as productive as the reds. They are gone now. Comments (4)The thornless blackberries I'm familiar with that do well in z5, like Chester tend to be pretty tart, although palatable when dead ripe. The real sweet ones like Navajo and Triple Crown tend to freeze out in temps. much below 0 F. If you want sweet ones you can spread the canes on the ground and cover with leaves in fall so they survive winter....See MoreBest black raspberry
Comments (46)Bill, Good idea, maybe late- winter early spring. To avoid any possible winter damage. It's when I plan to shape mine. Last year I was forced to prune early as laterals tip rooted by themselves all over the place! Yikes! It's not doing that this year.As soon as I saw them I cut the laterals back. This year laterals are really not growing crazy wild. Go figure... I have two more I added this year. Too small to prune at all. Jewel and Niwot. Niwot is a primocane fruiting black raspberry. the first commercial cultivar. The primocanes have flowers and will fruit in about a month. Barely making it before first frost. In the description it mentions late fruiting the first year, so hopefully it will fruit earlier next year. I will treat it like an everbearing red. I will remove top 1/3 after fruiting and take the summer harvest too, next year. Here is some important info. This year my reds over produced primocanes. Both the summer bearing and everbearing. probably in response to the harsh winter. I asked MSU about pruning them out early instead of the usual late winter pruning. I usually also prune weak and crowded canes out late winter. I was worried about the competition for light weakening all canes. They said wait till 3 feet tall then you can. So I did. And few came back, and the ones left grew very large, 6 to 7 feet! Now the fall fruiting primocanes are giant and producing loads of fruit. Best fall crop on the everbearing I ever had. And the summer bearing are huge too. Starting to form laterals without any pruning. Pretty cool! So thinning of new primocanes once 3 feet is really a good idea as surviving canes appreciate the chance to reach full potential. I did this with Allen black too. it produce 15 primocanes, that's a crazy amount. I thinned them to 9 canes. Last year I only had 3 canes and got hundreds of berries. I expect thousands next summer!...See MoreRed, Yellow, Black raspberries
Comments (4)Brenda, I think all the raspberries he had were given to him at one point by someone else. Raspberries are an excellent sharing fruit. :D Not that it matters all that much, I'll find out soon enough what their growth habits are like..but I'm just the type of person who likes to know exactly what I have! (by the way..it has been quite some time since I was in here!)...See Moredenninmi
