Two shrub ID's, please, look like they are deciduous (pics)

I think the first one might be a smoke tree but am not sure, it was shaded this am, planted on the west side of somebody's house where it will get lots of south sun around noon and after; so photo is not the best. The second one might be Weigela.

I have photographs of the entire bushes if that will help. They are both about the same height, 3-4', and tend to spread out. The white one has a pleasant scent.

Can anybody tell me for sure what they are?

Thank you so much. I want some :). Exactly like that. I'm not sure but what Weigela comes if different varieties, and I want one just like that one.

Can't help you on the ID - as I don't seen that one alot in Oregon. I wonder if it's in the Camelia family? Lovely brown stems on that thing, tho! A bit more info might help others to help you confirm it's name - for example - how long has it been there - how has it responded to seasons so far? Does it look like it may form flower buds as it matures? From the pix it looks like a cultivated evergreen perennial shrub, entering it's 3rd year, but possibly Deciduous, or somewhat tender and may need protection to remain evergreen. Looks like you are taking good care of it's water needs, and that it may be in a sheltered area...so you may be doing fine on care so far. Maybe consider rooting a few stem cuttings? I yielded to an invitation at a university trial garden a couple of years ago to pull some up and try it, so I did and really like it. But then I have a lot of space I need to smother weeds out of, and it's great for that--in our case a sunny edge of the driveway that's well seeded with crabgass. I haven't found it invasive at all yet, just a very happy and handsome spreader and occupier that will elbow aside plants that can't tolerate competition. Asters and glads that stuck their ground are growing and blooming happily so far in the middle of the clump, but I don't know how long that can continue. One thing not always mentioned about it is that around bloom time (about now) the leaves develop a rust coloration in their patterning, at least here, not a disease but definitely something to take into account in positioning. In our zone it dies back totally in winter. No reversion. 4-5 feet tall.

Regardless of what that shrub actually is, the only thing that would definitely need "cutting back" is the Echinacea. It's a deciduous perennial and once the foliage is knocked to the ground, you can "cut it back" (or let the foliage help protect it against winter cold and then clean it up in the spring). I'm assuming your shrub is woody and as with the woody rose-of-sharon, no "cutting back" is needed except in late spring to remove any damaged wood. The lavender may be hardy where you are so you'd treat it as a woody shrublet, as well. If it's not completely hardy, wait until late spring to prune off damaged/frosted growth. By the way, your lavender actually looks more like Russian sage (Perovskia) to me; it might be just my old eyes. Joe

Ok, it looks like the first one is Wahoo. The 2nd one I so want to be a native Bittersweet, not the oriental substitute. I took some more photos today. They are vining around some Sumac. Bittersweet Bittersweet Any other opinions??

Weigela comes in lots of different varieties and a lot of them have dark green/purple foliage and flowers more on the magenta side rather than the clear pink shown in your photo.

I found both plants at Klehm's, there were some weigela I liked even better, and I think they have the darker one, too. The are kind of expensive, but they seem to ship top quality plants. I probably will have more to order from them and will save everything up for next spring. And thank you, too.

If I remember correctly Chionanthus virginicus is a low growing tree commonly called "fringe tree".

Aliska. Weigela is extremely easy to grow from cuttings if you know anyone who has one you like the look of. Maybe you could ask around. Also if you found a local source you would know it suited your location. You can take cuttings any time. Just stick several pieces in the ground and keep them well watered. Some will be bound to root.

Really? I've not tried cuttings that way yet, just some raspberries I took too young last year. Maybe I'll work up my courage and knock on their door . . .I know you can do that with forsythia and pussy willow.

york rose, yes, I did find the common name is fringe tree. I guess they can get quite large; I wouldn't want one any bigger than the one I photographed (didn't show the whole shrub, more bushlike in form), but I suppose I could keep one in check by pruning if it starts getting too big. One can hope, I'm lucky to get things to grow at all sometimes.
