There is no problem planting a Blue Prince and Blue Princess together. Monrovia actually sells them together in the same pot as Royalty Family.
I'm not clear though when you say you don't want one without fruit. No matter how you plant them, the male (Blue Prince) will never have fruit. You actually only need one male for the two females, the male will pollinate both females as long as they are reasonably close. I've seen recommendations ranging from within 100' up to 1/4 mile, of course the closer the more certain you'll have pollination.

thanks for the reply... i meant i just dont want a large shrub without the berries standing alone. i will probably plant both together. i read that they take a long time to grow, when can i expect to see some significant growth? they are all ~1 ft right now.

If your yard is configured the right way, you can also plant the males out of the way so they aren't easily seen (or obvious about their lack of fruit). That way (as long as the males have enough sun to bloom decently) the only hollies "the neighbors" will see are the berry-bearing females.

Hollies are somewhat unusual in that unlike most flowering plants which contain both male and female aspects of the plant together in the one flower, hollies usually have plants of different sexes, like we humans are. Thus you must plant a non-fruiting male somwhere nearby if you want the females to get berries.

I bought and planted Blue Prince and Blue Princess Holly bushes (one of each) in May or June of this year. I planted them approximately 5 to 6 feet apart in partial shade. Both plants seemed to be doing fine and the Princess started to develop berries. Then, all of the sudden, the Princess shriveled-up, lost all its leaves and berries and appeared to die. The Prince, meanwhile, is doing fine and growing well with nice glossy leaves. Someone said that I may have planted them too close together; could this be true? I have since moved the Princess to another location (about 50 gfeet away). I replanted the Princess because the stems still seem to be pretty supple and I'm not completely sure it's actually dead. Suggestions? Help!

Rosehunter, any follow up? I've just purchased three princesses and one prince for a twenty foot hedge application and would like to know if four feet apart is too close...

For a hedge, o dubhgaill, 4' is fine since it will cover your length evenly.

Rosehunter, there is NO reason you have to separate the male and female hollies, as said above, they are sold with the two bushes in the same pot. If there is still green cambium layer, right under the outer bark - do a scratch test and see, then the holly is still living. Pay careful attention to watering and it should be fine. However, if the nursery you bought it from offered a one-year guarantee, I would look for the receipt and exercise the guarantee if it hasn't begun to leaf out or at least show swelling buds by now - your member's page doesn't say where you live so I don't know whether winter still prevails or if your spring has begun.
